In today's increasingly strained medical configuration, the meaning of design is no longer limited to aesthetics and function, but has evolved to nourish, heal and Support people in vulnerable situations. House of Grey took this concept seriously and applied it to the space transformation of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Whittington Hospital in central London. Through the redesign of the family consultation room and the staff lounge, a long-term support for patients and staff is created.
House of Grey has been practicing to create opportunities and environments for individuals in the ecosystem to enhance health and vitality. Therefore, the design revolves around the concept of Salutogenic, which is different from the logic of traditional hospitals emphasizing disease treatment. Salutogenic encourages the creation of a more inclusive, warm and humane space, so that people can not only recover physically, but also obtain psychological support and comfort. The project consists of three therapeutic and wellness Spaces; A quiet lounge for staff; A nurturing place for parents to accompany them through the difficult times of life.
“The design concept of circular health was realized when I was in the hospital to give birth. The glare of fluorescent lamps and the overall environmental design at that time did not nourish my mind, nor did it help postpartum psychological recovery. I am eager for support and for medical staff to work at their best, rather than being forced to muddle through in a stressful and challenging environment.”
– Louisa Grey, Founder of House of Grey
"Nurture", the staff lounge, is a quiet space within the hospital. The high-pressure environment of the hospital makes the medical staff in a state of physical and mental exhaustion for a long time, and the configuration of a lounge that can provide psychological support and emotional regulation is crucial. In the "Nourishing Space", the design principles of circular health are applied to create a peaceful environment for medical staff to achieve mental and emotional release after their shift, which is conducive to their own physical and mental adjustment.

While the lounge is a compact space, it still accommodates and ADAPTS to the changing needs of employees. Given its small footprint, it was designed with a strong focus on ergonomic and modular application of elements to maximize comfort and functionality, incorporating flexibly configured furniture into ambient lighting and natural textures.

House of Grey
House of Grey Design Studio has transformed the original cold and boring medical environment into a health-promoting and inspiring healing space through the design concept of "circular health" in a free design way. Nourish Space creates a mental space for midwives to self-regulate and rejuvenate between shifts, enabling them to provide care at their best and make the most rational clinical decisions.

"Cure," the consulting room. For the families of NICU newborns, the hospital is not only a place of healing, but also a space where they face anxiety, grief and uncertainty. Counseling rooms need to be designed to provide a sense of security and emotional comfort so that parents can be supported in their most vulnerable moments.

Health design prioritizes mental, emotional, and physical healing. House of Grey believes that well-designed environments can evoke a sense of security and trust. The space design uses soft curves rather than sharp geometric forms to create a sense of embrace rather than bondage. The color scheme is inspired by nature and uses neutral tones that calm people.

House of grey hopes that more creative teams and the design community will join in and support the project by donating building materials and furniture. This will help hospitals implement Circular health Design, ensuring the most beautiful, wholesome and sensible Spaces for the NHS - the public healthcare system on which most people in the UK depend - have a positive impact on local communities.

"Support", the parent lounge, is a physical space, but also a place for family members to support each other, share experiences, and face challenges together. Unlike the usual clinical setting of a hospital, it is shaped as a "second home" where parents can find familiarity and a sense of belonging.

The spatial layout is derived from the "Salutogenic Design" in the field of healthcare, which is a design concept that actively promotes individual recovery, provides leisure space and helps people regain health by consciously incorporating health elements into every detail of the interior. In this project, the design will return to its roots and create an effective health ecology in the clinical environment.

Whittington Hospital has special meaning for House of Grey - it sits in the heart of a North London community where the design studio works and its founder lives. Team members have visited, or have been here for medical treatment, and some studio members have ushered in the birth of new lives here.
The NHS is currently facing a serious resource challenge, but this also provides an opportunity to rethink the healthcare environment. The House of Grey is designed through Salutogenic cycles to change people's stereotypes of the hospital and make it an energy space full of hope and healing. Their practice proves that design can not only support the health of the body, but also nourish the mind, and this is the direction that the medical space should develop in the future.
Whittington Hospital's NICU renovation project shows how space can inspire hope, foster resilience and create a deep connection between communities. It reminds us that quality and accessible medical services should not only be reflected in medical technology, but should include more humane care. In the future, we look forward to seeing more healthcare Spaces with well-being, sustainability and human connection at their core, making it truly a place of healing, support and hope.
