On May 10th, 2025 (local time), Venice Biennale's 19th International Architecture Exhibition opened. At this "Olympics of Architecture," the Guangdong rural revitalization project "Langtou Experiment" was invited to showcase at the themed pavilion, making it China's first rural revitalization project selected for the Venice Biennale's thematic exhibition with a comprehensive approach of "Rural Construction + Practice."
At the exhibition opening, the Guangdong artist Wen Qiuwen illuminated the winding canals of Venice, the "City of Water," with Langtou fish lanterns intricately woven from bamboo strips aboard iconic Venetian gondolas, creating a dialogue between tradition and modernity on the global stage.
The "Langtou Experiment" project, presented through images and models, tells the story of how Langtou Village, a 700-year-old ancient settlement, has been revitalized.
Langtou Village, located in the Pearl River Delta, is home to one of the rare, large-scale, and well-preserved ancient architectural clusters from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The village boasts 26 ancestral halls and study halls lined up in a row, over 200 ancient residences scattered throughout the area, and 17 alleyways crisscrossing the village.
Over the past three years, experts in planning and design, architects, artists, cultural scholars, entrepreneurs, and local villagers have made joint efforts to the project, supported by Zhang Yonghe's "Atelier FCJZ", Guangdong Vipshop Philanthropic Foundation and other social forces.
Today, the ancient alleys of Langtou are bustling with tourists. A cluster of 21 standalone rural-style guesthouses integrates into the ancient village with eco-friendly design, offering comfortable accommodations for a relaxing vacation. The simple, orderly grey bricks and the bright, striking signage represent a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
At the entrance of Langtou Village stands the ChunYangTai Arts and Cultural Center, an active platform that merges the traditional village style with modern architectural aesthetics. In September 2024, 79 original sculptures by renowned sculptor Alberto Giacometti were displayed in its exhibition hall, alongsidesix art installations by Chinese artists inspired by Giacometti's works, forming the exhibition "Figure as Monument-Alberto Giacometti in Langtou." The exhibition has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors, including international tourists from Russia, the UK, Canada, Brazil, and other countries.
In addition to tourists, the Langtou Village and the ChunYangTai Arts and Cultural Center have also become gathering places for scholars from China and abroad. Academic institutions, such as the HKU Faculty of Architecture, where Zhang Yonghe teaches, and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, Sun Yat-sen University, have held exhibitions, conducted field studies, and engaged in academic dialogues here, contributing to the establishment of a new cultural exchange and practice platform for the development of humanities at the Greater Bay Area.

世界看见，广东古村三年之变！花都塱头鱼灯点亮威尼斯双年展
当地时间2025年5月10日，第19届威尼斯国际建筑双年展开幕。在这场“建筑界的奥林匹克”盛会上，广东乡村振兴项目“塱头实验”受邀参展主题馆，这是中国首个以“乡建+实践”完整体入选威尼斯双年展主题馆的乡村振兴项目。
展览开幕之际，在一艘艘威尼斯“贡多拉”小艇上，广东艺术家温秋雯用竹篾绑扎的塱头鱼灯，点亮了“水城”威尼斯的蜿蜒水道，在世界舞台上展开一场传统与现代的对话。
在展览现场，“塱头实验”项目通过影像与模型，讲述了一个已有700多年历史的花都炭步镇塱头村焕发新生的故事：
花都炭步镇塱头村坐拥珠三角地区罕见的规模庞大、保存完整的明清古建筑群，村面26座祠堂、书室一字排开，200多座古民居星罗棋布，17条巷道纵横交错。
三年以来，来自五湖四海的规划设计专家、建筑师、艺术家、文化学者、企业家和本地村民协力共创，张永和“非常建筑”团队、广东省唯品会慈善基金会等社会各界力量注入，一起实验，振兴乡村。
如今，三馀里古巷已是游人如鲫。21座独栋乡居院落组成的特色民宿群“和春住”，以原生态设计融于塱头古村建筑群中，内部设施已成为提供舒适度假体验的居所。质朴规整的青砖与鲜艳醒目的招牌，如传统与潮流的缩影，在这里和谐共生。
坐落在塱头村村口的春阳台艺文中心，提供了融合传统古村落与现代建筑美学的活性载体。2024年9月，著名雕塑家贾科梅蒂的79件雕塑原作被“搬入”春阳台展厅，中国艺术家以此为灵感制作的六件艺术装置则“嵌入”古村，同构为《1的纪念性：贾科梅蒂在塱头》展览。为此慕名前来的观众累计达数十万人次，其中不乏来自俄罗斯、英国、加拿大以及巴西等国家的国际游客。
除了游客，塱头古村和春阳台近年来也不断迎来海内外人文学者的团队。张永和任教的香港大学建筑学院，还有中山大学人文高等研究院等学术机构，在此举办展览、开展田野调查与学术对话，为推动人文湾区建设建设新的文化交流和实践平台。
