Prof. Han-Kwang Yang: Professor Jin-Pok Kim was a pioneering figure in gastric cancer surgery and oncology across Asia. Personally, he was also my mentor, so I deeply understand his immense contributions. Professor Kim was not only a skilled surgeon specializing in gastric cancer but also an exceptional leader.

He believed in fostering diversity by bringing together individuals from different universities and institutions. He emphasized the importance of young clinicians being scientifically active and proficient in communication skills, including English, to facilitate global collaboration.

Professor Kim's initiatives led to the establishment of the Korean Cancer Association, the Asian Pacific Cancer Congress, and the Asian Clinical oncology Society, paving the way for collaborative efforts in oncology. The Asian Oncology Society (AOS), which we are celebrating today, was formed in 2018 through the merging of these institutions, embodying his vision of unity and cooperation in advancing cancer research and care.

Han Kwang Yang

Prof. Han-Kwang Yang: Gastric cancer remains a significant global health issue, with approximately one million new cases annually, nearly half of which occur in Asia. At Seoul National University Hospital, we specialize in gastric cancer treatment, which involves a multidisciplinary approach.

For localized gastric cancer, surgery remains the cornerstone of treatment. However, for advanced cases, additional therapies such as chemotherapy are essential. Managing this disease requires collaboration among radiologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, surgeons, and support teams, including nurses, pharmacists, and nutritionists.

Beyond institutional efforts, international cooperation is critical. Our collaborative clinical trials and research networks have provided world-class evidence for treatment advancements, such as laparoscopic surgery guidelines. Through these efforts, we continue to push the boundaries of gastric cancer management.

Prof. Han-Kwang Yang: While prestigious oncology societies like ASCO in the United States and ESMO in Europe have long served as global leaders, it's time for Asia to strengthen its own collaborative platforms. Many Asian clinicians and researchers face challenges such as travel and jet lag when attending conferences abroad.

This realization led to the creation of the Asian Oncology Society (AOS) in 2018, merging the Asian Pacific Cancer Congress (APCC) and the Asian Clinical Oncology Society (ACOS). Since then, we've hosted successful meetings in Manila, Seoul, Yokohama, and now Xi'an. With the strong leadership of our current president, Dr. Daiming Fan, we aim to build AOS into a vital platform for Asian oncologists and scientists.

Through AOS, we can foster collaboration in areas where diseases like gastric cancer are prevalent, particularly among Japan, China, and Korea. The geographic proximity of Asian countries facilitates more frequent and meaningful interactions, supported by both in-person and virtual meetings. This growing platform will drive advancements in oncology across the region and beyond.
