Authorities in northern Laos' Luang Prabang province are intensifying efforts to further improve tourism and secure the prestigious Tourism Destination Award from the Green Destinations Organization by finalizing key documents and aligning with sustainability evaluation criteria.

Authorities are working to enhance the quality of tourism in Luang Prabang, with the goal of transforming the province into a high-quality, modern destination that is well-connected regionally and internationally by 2029, Lao National TV reported on Monday.

Efforts will continue to focus on addressing recommendations from the Green Destinations Organization, particularly concerning the criteria, conditions, and indicators required for certification as a sustainable tourism destination.

Provincial authorities have urged all relevant sectors to contribute detailed feedback and data to support Luang Prabang's efforts in achieving the certification.

The Green Destinations Organization, a global non-profit, is a leading destination certification organization focused on improving quality and sustainability in tourism destinations and businesses.

By achieving the Green Destinations certification, Luang Prabang aims to enhance its global reputation as a culturally rich and sustainable tourism hub, in line with its long-term development goals.

The province is hoping to attract at least 2.3 million visitors in 2025, targeting more than 1.2 billion U.S. dollars in revenue.

Luang Prabang province, some 220 km north of the Lao capital Vientiane, is one of the most well-known provinces in Laos and a top tourist destination for its old temples, scenic attractions and rural landscapes.
