前几天鹏程（《他一夜之间长大》讲述过）的班主任康老师给我发来信息：鹏程已经在上海一家五星级酒店实习了，今年9月就能毕业。我赶紧把这个好消息告诉了袁老师。

工作中的鹏程

A few days ago, Pengcheng’s class teacher, Ms. Kang, sent me a message: “Pengcheng is now interning at a five-star hotel in Shanghai. He’ll graduate this September.” I shared this news with Ms. Yuan Li, and she said, “You should write something about it.”

鹏程今年满20了，13年前我在村里走访第一次见到他，他正和弟弟在院子里玩耍。屋里不断传出爸爸大声的咳嗽声，他因尘肺病失去了劳动力，躺在床上呼吸急促，他已经很久没下过床了。妈妈在厨房熬药，面色凝重。爷爷奶奶身体看上去都不错，也在院子里忙碌着，尽管这个家被尘肺病的阴影笼罩，但一家人看上去都很平静。尤其孩子们的笑声冲淡了这一切，那时的鹏程喜欢抿着嘴笑，笑起来脸上有两个可爱的小酒窝。

幼年的鹏程和弟弟

Pengcheng turned twenty this year. Thirteen years ago, I first met him while visiting his village. He was just a little boy then, playing in the yard with his younger brother. Their father was bedridden with pneumoconiosis, breathing heavily and coughing constantly. Their mother was in the kitchen boiling medicine, her face full of worry. The grandparents were busy in the courtyard. Despite the heavy shadow cast by illness, the family lived together in a peaceful atmosphere. Back then, Pengcheng had a habit of smiling with his lips pressed together—when he smiled, two dimples would appear on his cheeks.

命运的风雨，来得比想象中更急。接下来几年，爸爸的病情越发严重，妈妈在一个清晨带着弟弟离开了家。从那之后，鹏程一下子变得沉默寡言，放学回家默默肩负起照顾爸爸的重任。2019年的冬天，大雪封山，爸爸永远地离开了这个破碎的家。但厄运似乎仍旧不肯放过这个忧郁的少年，不久后他被诊断出肾病，脸浮肿的不成样子。住院期间，妈妈来过一次，留下两袋水果，低着头说：以后别再联系了......

But life’s storms came faster than anyone expected. In the following years, his father's illness worsened. One morning, his mother took his younger brother and left. After that, Pengcheng became quiet and withdrawn. After school, he took on the responsibility of caring for his father. In the winter of 2019, heavy snow blocked the mountain roads, and his father passed away. Misfortune didn’t stop there. Not long after, Pengcheng was diagnosed with kidney disease. During his hospital stay, his mother visited once, left two bags of fruit, and said, “Don’t contact me anymore.”

住院的鹏程

去年基金会推荐鹏程去了SYB海上青焙坊，参加为期一年的免费法式烘焙培训班。去年底，鹏程给我们寄来了他亲手做的黄油可颂面包，松软香甜味道超棒，真心他感到高兴。

Last year, our foundation recommended him to attend a free one-year French baking program in Shanghai Young Bakers. At the end of the year, Pengcheng sent Ms. Yuan and me some butter croissants he had made—soft, fragrant, and sweet. We were genuinely happy for him.

学习中的鹏程

昨天在微信上聊天，问起他有什么打算？他说实习结束就要找工作了，他很喜欢烘焙，希望能一直做下去。但今年想先去进厂打工挣钱，要回老家盖房子。问他做烘焙肯定是要在外面立业成家了，为啥还要回老家？他说，爷爷前年去世了，留下奶奶孤苦伶仃住在老房子里，老房子已经是危房了，下大雨就扛不住，有倒塌的危险，要给奶奶盖个新房子。说起费用，他透露学烘焙之前在工厂干了一年，存了一点点，政府也会有一点补贴，再找亲戚们借一点，将来工作了慢慢还。

他还说宿舍楼下有个健身房，每天都抽时间去健身。“身体最重要，一旦身体出了问题，就什么都干不成了。”听着他平静地讲述，有点揪心！，一个刚满20岁的大男孩，讲出这样的话显然是太早了。虽然听上去轻描淡写，但生活的沉重从未远离。他依然在跋涉着，一个人面对整个世界。或许还有我们，但我们又能帮多少？他的人生路还要靠自己一步步走出来。

学习中的鹏程

Yesterday, we chatted on WeChat. I asked about his plans. He said that after the internship, he would look for a job—he truly enjoys baking and hopes to keep doing it. But first, he wants to work in a factory to earn money and build a house in his hometown. I asked why he would want to do so if he plans to keep working elsewhere. He said his grandfather passed away two years ago, and his grandmother still lives alone in the old house. The house is in such disrepair that it might collapse in heavy rain. He wants to build a new, single-story house for her. I asked where he’d get the money. He said he saved a little from a year of factory work before learning baking, and the government might provide a small subsidy. He’ll borrow the rest from relatives and pay them back slowly while working. He also told me he has started working out. There’s a gym near his dorm, and he goes every day. “Health is the most important thing,” he said. “If I get sick again, I won’t be able to do anything.” Listening to him speak so calmly, I couldn’t help but feel heartache. Life is heavy for him who is just twenty years old, but he doesn’t dwell on it. He simply knows what he must do. “I’ll take it one step at a time,” he said. “I can’t think that far ahead.”

鹏程还发来一张工作照，他穿着白色工作服，系着围裙，包着头巾，正在专注地工作着。这个在风雨中长大的英俊少年，像石缝里钻出的野草，倔强地生长着，那些被风吹雨打的日子，最终都成为滋养生命的土壤。苦难不值得歌颂，但那些从坚困中挣扎着开出的花，应该被世界温柔相待。

Pengcheng also sent me a photo of him at work. In the photo, he’s wearing a white uniform, apron, and headscarf, completely focused on what he’s doing. This boy who grew up in the storm is like wild grass sprouting from the cracks in stone—stubborn and resilient. The days he endured wind and rain have become the very soil that nourished him. Suffering is not something to be glorified, but the flowers that bloom through the cracks deserve the world’s tenderness.
