相信大家在看到“call someone names”这个短语时，一定会想到这两部电影：

《请以你的名字呼唤我》Call Me by Your Name

或许也有小伙伴会想到Call me maybe这首歌：

看到call someone names这个短语，我们肯定会想到中文里面的“叫某人名字”，如果你真这么想，那就真的很尴尬了。

其实我们经常所说的“叫某人名字”是“call one's name”，这与“call one names”是不一样的。

“call someone names”实际上表示的是“辱骂某人”。

注意二者的区别：

所以，call someone names并不是“喊某人的名字”，它的真实含义是“辱骂别人”即If someone calls you names, they insult you by saying unpleasant things to you or about you.

这个用法尤其用于孩子之间的辱骂。

例：

Tom's worried that if he wears glasses at school the other children will call him names.

At school, bullying takes many forms, including whispering about people and calling them names.

在学校里，欺凌行为有很多种形式，包括对别人耳语和骂人。

那么，类似call me by your name里，by name的意思是“以名字; 指名道姓地”，即When you mention someone or something by name, or address someone by name, you use their name.

例：

He greets customers by name and enquires about their health.

知名人士

big name可不是“大名”，在这里指“大名鼎鼎的人，知名人士”。因为"name"本身有“名人”的意思，相当于"big potato"。

例：

He's a big name in the art world.

make a name for yourself

(因…)成名;(以…)出名

给自己制定一个名字，那就是让自己出名啦。意思是“(因…)成名;(以…)出名”，即If you make a name for yourself or make your name as something, you become well-known for that thing.

例：

Or you just trying to make a name for yourself?

name names

点出(或指出)(做错事者)的名字

第一个name是动词，意思是“说出…的名称”，第二个names是名词，意思就是“名字”。

name names就是对于“错误”而“说出某（些）人的名字”，即If you name names, you identify the people who have done something, often something wrong.

例：

I knew someone had lied but I wouldn't name names.

而name no names，意思则为（为给对方留面子而）不点名。

英文释义为：to say no specific name or names when reporting or discussing an incident.

例：

The camera has captured the guy who had stolen the money. I’m naming no names now, but return by tomorrow, or I will call the police.

英英释义：to decide the date on which you are going to get married.意思就是“选定婚期，挑个好日子”。

例：

Just name the day that you like best.

lend one‘s name to something

支持或赞同某事

既然能将自己的名字借给别人或是某个事物，也就是拿自己的名誉担保，肯定是表达支持和赞同的态度了。

英英释义：to let it be known in public that you support or agree with something.意思是：公开表明你支持或同意某事

例：

He had political points of view and lent his name to a lot of causes.

英英释义：to show a lack of respect when using somebody’s name or when talking about them.在使用某人的名字或谈论他们时表现出对他们的不尊重
