From Woodcut to Digital:
The 2nd International Exhibition on Printmaking
Ontology and Technological Boundaries Invitation
I.Exhibition Background & Theme
As an iconic Chinese artistic tradition, woodcut printmaking traces its origins to the frontispiece woodcut of Tang Dynasty’s Diamond Sutra. Over a millennium of evolution, it has transcended its initial applications in book printing and religious dissemination to establish an intricate visual lexicon and technical system in modern artistic practice. The recent digital revolution has fundamentally reconfigured printmaking. Digital printmaking, characterized by its operational efficiency, creative flexibility, and aesthetic diversity, now constitutes a vital branch of contemporary art. This intersection of tradition and innovation not only expands printmaking’s material frontiers but also provokes profound discourse on the “ontology of art and the limits of technology”.
Organized under the theme “From Woodcut to Digital”, this exhibition aims to chart the evolutionary trajectory from traditional woodcut to digital printmaking through representative case studies, investigate the impact of digital technology on printmaking artistic essence and facilitate global scholarly exchanges on paradigm-shifting challenges in the field. Key focuses include “Contemporary Reinterpretation of Traditional Forms”, “Aesthetic Syntax of Digital Processes”, and “Redefining Printmaking Boundaries”. This event aims to revitalize Shanghai-style printmaking and enhance China’s international influence in this art.
