The melody grew louder as Clara and Theo descended a grand staircase. The ornate banister was covered in cobwebs, and each step creaked beneath their weight. At the bottom of the staircase was a large double door, slightly ajar, with golden carvings of musical notes etched into its surface.
“This must be the music room,” Clara whispered, her voice tinged with awe.
Theo nudged the door open, and they stepped inside. The room was breathtaking. A grand piano stood in the center, its polished surface gleaming unnaturally in the dim light. Sheet music lay open on the stand, as though someone had just been playing. The twins approached cautiously. Clara’s fingers grazed the keys, and the melody abruptly stopped.
“I didn’t touch it!” Clara exclaimed, stepping back.
Before Theo could respond, the pages of the sheet music began to flip on their own, stopping at a page titled The Song of Souls. A whisper seemed to come from the piano itself: “Play it.”
“No way,” Theo muttered, pulling Clara back. But Clara was mesmerized. She sat down, her fingers hovering over the keys.
“Don’t,” Theo warned, but it was too late. The first haunting notes echoed through the room, and the door behind them slammed shut.
