On January 13th, the General Administration of Customs of the PRC released the annual import and export data for 2024. The figures indicate that in 2024, China's total value of imports and exports of goods trade reached 43.85 trillion yuan, marking a year-on-year growth of 5% and setting a new historical record.

In 2024, China's imports amounted to 18.39 trillion yuan, an increase of 2.3%. According to the latest data from the World Trade Organization, China's import growth rate outpaced the global average by one percentage point in the first three quarters of 2024, and it is expected to maintain its position as the world's second-largest importer for the full year.

On the other hand, China's exports for 2024 surpassed 25 trillion yuan for the first time, reaching 25.45 trillion yuan, with a year-on-year increase of 7.1%, marking eight consecutive years of growth.

The eastern, central and western regions, and northeastern regions of China exhibited complementary advantages, achieving growth across all import and export sectors in 2024.

The integrated development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has accelerated, with the nine cities in the region reporting a 10.1% increase in imports and exports, contributing 1.9 percentage points to the national total.

In recent years, China's foreign trade network has expanded significantly. In 2024, import and export trade with countries along the "Belt and Road Initiative" totaled 22.07 trillion yuan, up 6.4% year-on-year, accounting for more than 50% of China's total trade volume for the first time. Notably, imports and exports to ASEAN countries grew by 9%, maintaining a five-year streak for the two to become each other's largest trading partners.

Trade in traditional markets such as the European Union and the United States continues to show positive growth. The EU remains the largest source of consumer goods imports for China and the top export market for China's electromechanical products. In 2024, bilateral trade with the EU grew by 1.6%, with France, Spain, and Hungary seeing increases of 2%, 4.5%, and 12.9%, respectively. During the same period, trade between China and the United States grew by 4.9%, aligning closely with the overall growth rate of China's trade.
