On February 2nd, 2025, the world observes the 29th annual World Wetlands Day under the theme "Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future." As of today, Guangdong Province is home to 6 internationally important wetlands, 3 nationally important wetlands, 43 provincially important wetlands, 27 national wetland parks, and 6 provincial wetland parks, signaling a new wetland protection framework.

During the mild winter, the Haozhaolou Wetland Park in Huizhou, the Mangrove National Nature Reserve in Zhanjiang, and the Haifeng Wetlands in Shanwei attract numerous visitors. As one of China's most resource-rich provinces in terms of wetlands, Guangdong boasts a total wetland area of 1.9 million hectares and a diverse range of wetland types.

Wetland protection and restoration are key pillars of Guangdong's ecological civilization efforts. The province has built a multi-tiered protection system, covering nature reserves, wetland parks, and more. Through initiatives like "Small Wetlands+" and "Wetland Parks+," Guangdong is nurturing emerging industries such as wetland health and ecotourism, enhancing both the environment quality and economic growth.

Among the top priorities is the protection and restoration of Mangrove wetlands. Guangdong leads China in mangrove area, with 11,400 hectares of mangroves. It is also one of the provinces with the most optimal natural resources for mangrove ecosystems, boasting 18 families, 24 genera, and 27 species of mangrove plants. Nearly 95% of Guangdong's mangroves have been incorporated into ecological red lines, and the International Mangrove Center has been inaugurated in Shenzhen to support ongoing conservation efforts.

Bird conservation is another critical focus of Guangdong's wetland protection work. The province is home to 584 species of wild birds, including 412 migratory species. In recent years, new species and distributions have been recorded, and wild bird populations are gradually recovering, reflecting the success of Guangdong's environmental protection initiatives.
