On theafternoon of March 26, 2025, the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) held a roundtable conference on “Towards the Future of Regional Integration: Openness & Connectivity”. Nurlan Yermekbayev, Secretary General of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), delivered a speech in the session titled “Synergizing Regional Mechanisms”, underscoring the imperative for regional groups to forge closer ties.
Mr. Yermekbayev noted that since its established in 2001, the SCO has expanded from six members to ten, evolving into a transregional Eurasian organization. He emphasized that the SCO is neither a military bloc nor an alliance focused on confrontation, but rather a platform for open and equal cooperation in various fields, with its mission of promoting peace and development in the Asia-Pacific region.
Mr. Yermekbayev reviewed the SCO’s collaborative efforts with other regional and international mechanisms, highlighting that regional cooperation plays an important role in supporting the UN’s work and will be further strengthened.
In closing, Mr. Yermekbayev stated that 2025 marks a pivotal year as the SCO celebrates its 25th anniversary. With China holding the rotating presidency, the SCO Summit in Tianjin will serve as a platform for member states to reflect on past achievements and chart a strategic course through 2035. Mr. Yermekbayev also commended the BFA for its growing global influence and called for enhanced cooperation among participants to tackle shared challenges.
