Infrastructure is among the highlights of cooperation between China and Cambodia. In Cambodia, a Chinese-invested highway helps locals reduce travel time and boosts economic growth along its route. Silkina Ahluwalia reports from Phnom Penh.

SILKINA AHLUWALIA，Phnom Penh, Cambodia: "Behind me is the the Phnom Penh–Sihanoukville Expressway. This is Cambodia’s first-ever highway built with Chinese investment under the Belt and Road Initiative.....Right now Cambodia is just coming out of the New Year holiday....We've been told thousands of people were using the expressway to get to their destination as far as 187 kilometres away. Before this highway was built, it would take up to 5 hours get to the Province of Sihanouk, but now it takes just two hours. Two hours, that’s a huge difference. For people that want to do a day trip, meeting their families, going on vacations, this is faster, safer and so much more efficient.

We were just speaking to people on the ground here...they were saying how the scenery along this highway is really beautiful....And Sihanouk itself, in the southern part of Cambodia, is a very beautiful coastal town. It’s super popular among the locals here and now it’s really easy to get there from the capital city."

CHAN SOPHEAP，Local Tourist: ”This road is helping to make it faster and easier. This highway can connect Phnom Penh to other provinces faster and it also has many speed boats to different islands so the road from Phnom Penh to Sihanouk is only two hours and the other connections from the port to islands is 45 mins to one hour only."

SILKINA AHLUWALIA，Phnom Penh, Cambodia: "But this not just changing the way Cambodians travel for leisure, but for trade and business as well. Officials are saying that this new route has significantly boosted tourism to the coastal provinces during national holidays and that’s amazing for the local economy.

This entire project was completed, with a total investment of over 2 billion US dollars. It also plays a crucial role in Cambodia’s growing logistics sector. It’s helping goods move faster across the country. So just by building this highway, Cambodia’s infrastructure sectors have improved dramatically. It’s truly a major achievement under the Belt and Road Initiative cooperation with China."

陈索菲（当地游客）：“这条路让出行变得更快更便捷。这条高速公路能更快地将金边与各省连接起来，而且还有许多快艇通往不同的岛屿，所以从金边到西哈努克只需两个小时，从港口到各个岛屿只需 45 分钟到一个小时。”

柬埔寨金边的西尔金娜·阿卢瓦利亚（SILKINA AHLUWALIA）表示：“但这不仅改变了柬埔寨人休闲出行的方式，也改变了他们贸易和商务出行的方式。官员们称，这条新线路在国家法定假日显著促进了沿海省份的旅游业发展，这对当地经济而言意义非凡。”
