Seeds of Creativity: Exposure to Scientific Fictions and Occupational Choices

This paper explores the role of scientific fictions (Sci-Fi) in fostering curiosity and creativity, which are key to technological advancement. We exploit the short-term prosperity of Sci-Fi in China in early 1980s. Our cohort DID design leverages the variation in locality and time of the circulation of Sci-Fi magazines. We show that for the individuals who exposed to Sci-Fi magazines between age 12 and 22, the probability to become scientific and technical personnel are significantly higher, and their job task is more research-oriented. We provide evidence that the exposure to Sci-Fi magazines increases creative mind and openness, encourages tolerance to differences, reduces religiosity. Our findings highlight how individual exposure to new ideas in impressionable ages could have long-term impact on occupational choice and human capital formation.

We study how whistleblower policies affect a firm’s internal communication, public information and expected value. An informed manager, who can divert cash for private benefit, manipulates internal information available to the employee to cover up evidence of his misconduct. Given her information, the employee chooses whether to blow the whistle and an action which affects internal alignment. Larger whistleblower rewards for the employee and harsher penalties for the manager reduce misconduct but also worsen internal communication. Public information quality worsens with harsher penalties but improves with larger rewards. Finally, when misalignment is sufficiently costly, such policies decrease firm value.

论文摘要

Do abundant natural resources promote or hinder local economic development? We contribute to this long-standing debate using a novel data set from China during 1990-2020. Using a "shift-share" strategy that interacts mineral reserve value with world price changes, we show that resource booms do not crowd out local manufacturing activity but amplify the impacts of resource price fluctuations on local GDP per capita and population for resource-abundant counties. In the long term, a higher resource reserve value is associate with neither faster nor slower economic growth. However, counties that have depleted their major mineral resources experience much slower economic growth conditional on initial resource endowment. Among resources-depleted counties, those who have previously substantially subsidized their manufacturing sector exhibit relatively better economic performance.

论文摘要

This project contains the first in-depth analysis of the most important investment strategy in DeFi – provision of concentrated liquidity to automated-market-making liquidity pools. The first contribution of this project is compilation of data on the whole population of concentrated liquidity positions and trades on the Ethereum blockchain. These data are vast, currently encompassing over 6,000 liquidity pools, over a million liquidity provision and withdrawal events, and over 70 million trades, as of the end of 2024. Concentrated liquidity provision is a combination of several strategies: liquidity concentration (the core quantitative part of the strategy); pool choice, which is a combination of a bet on trading volume in the pool and a reverse bet on the volatility of the exchange rate of the pool’s assets; asset picking; market timing; and transaction (gas) cost optimization. The second (methodological) contribution of the project is development of a unique decomposition of the concentrated liquidity provision strategy’s P&L into aforementioned comonents. The third contribution of the project is an in-depth analysis of relations between strategy parameters, strategy deployer characteristics, and liquidity pool characterestics on one hand and the profitability of each of strategy components on the other hand. To my knowledge, this is the first large-sample academic study of performance of concentrated liquidity provision strategies in DeFi. The fourth contribution of this project is to the broader literature on performance of quantitative strategies. Unlike in traditional asset markets, all strategies by all market participants in the DeFi market are observable and decomposable, and the performance of each aspect of every strategy is measurable. An additional advantage of the DeFi setting is that there is significantly less fundamental information in crypto assets than in assets traded in traditional markets, making quantitative strategies the predominant kind. By examining performance of various components of liquidity provision strategies, this project will shed light on quantitative investors’ skills and on reasons for the growth in the share of quantitative investments in the overall investment landscape.

Scheduling is about arranging and organizing daily activities along a time continuum. This study examines CEOs’ scheduling styles and their implications for their firms’ strategic decisions in the social domain. Specifically, scheduling activities sequentially in event-time, rather than allocating each individual task a separate time slot in clock-time, involves viewing the arranged activities and their associated time slots as interrelated or connected rather than as separated or isolated, and subsequently activates a tendency for holistic thinking rather than narrow thinking. CEOs with an event-time (clock-time) scheduling style thus tend to consider more groups of stakeholders over a broader range (narrowly consider a smaller group of stakeholders), leading to greater (less) engagement with corporate social responsibility (CSR). We predict a positive (negative) relationship between CEOs’ event-time scheduling (clock-time scheduling) and CSR. We develop a novel measure of CEO scheduling styles using a named-entity recognition (NER) algorithm, and further validate the measures using human rating measures from a survey and measures from a supervised machine-learning categorizer (ML categorizer). Analyzing the language content of Q&A sessions given by 2,625 CEOs of U.S. publicly listed firms during quarterly earnings conference calls in the years 2009-2018, we find strong support for our predictions. A series of methods, including Bartik’s shift-share instrument variables (IVs), IVs based on historical political economy literature, difference-in-difference-in-differences (DDD) design, and correction for omitted confounding variables help establish robust identification. Additional analyses using survey and experiment provide convergent evidence.

Algorithm Please: Effect of Creators Seeking Help from Algorithms on Consumer Reaction

In the evermore thriving creator economy, content recommendation algorithms play a crucial role in determining what is relevant and popular on social media platforms. In response, many creators have developed various practices to take advantage of these algorithms. One novel and prevalent practice is explicitly seeking help from algorithms in the posts, such as saying, “Algorithms please show this to young women.” Across seven studies (including a field study, a large-scale social survey, and five online experiments, two pre-registered), we consistently find that this practice can harm actual consumer responses and marketing outcomes, deviating from what the creators originally intended. This occurs because consumers perceive creators seeking help from algorithms as implementing platform optimization, and infer intentionality from their actions. Furthermore, we identify the purpose of seeking help as a key moderator, whereby the negative effect of this practice is attenuated when creators do so for others’ interests (vs. self-interest). This research not only contributes to research on creators’ algorithm-leveraging practices, platform optimization, and inferred creator intentionality, but also offers insights into how creators can leverage algorithms more wisely.
