The 15th National Games will reach the 200‑day countdown on April 23rd. Our reporters recently visited the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center, Guangzhou Gymnasium and Guangzhou University Town stadium to explore the renovation highlights of the Games venues.
Formerly the centerpiece for the Ninth National Games (2001) and the 2010 Asian Games, the Guangdong Olympic Sports Centeris renowned as a landmark of sports in Guangzhou. According to Luo Jianhe, chief designer of the stadium's upgrade project, renewable energy is being harnessed through photovoltaic systems installed on its roof and cantilevered walkways. This initiative will reduce annual carbon emissions by 191 metric tons, while low-carbon building materials cut construction-related emissions by over 30%.
During renovations, the stadium preserved its iconic features, including the ribbon-shaped canopy (symbolizing fluttering ribbons), petal-shaped grandstands (symbolizing kapok flowers, city flower of Guangzhou, in full bloom), horizontal eaves (symbolizing surging waves of the Greater Bay Area), and plaza landscapes (symbolizing the graceful movements of the Pearl River). The seating's color scheme now reflects the cultural essence of the Greater Bay Area.
For sustainable post-Games use, the stadium's second floor will fully open to the public, converting former single-purpose indoor spaces into open fitness areas. Outdoor plazas feature extensive shaded greenery and facilities, with lawn coverage reaching 40,000 square meters, a tangible step toward China's "dual carbon" goals.
The Guangzhou Gymnasium has reopened after 256 days of upgrades, with smart systems significantly enhancing spectator experiences. Yang Chunming, Chief Engineer of Hengsheng Group's First Branch, detailed that the 3D visual turnstiles at entrances complete identity verification in 0.3 seconds, and their Bluetooth-based AR navigation pushes optimal routes to phones without internet. This technology has been fully implemented across Guangzhou's main venues. After the Games, the "Smart Gym Pods" system will be launched to offer technological fitness service appointments such as VR training and AI posture assessments, leveraging the long-term benefits of the smart venues.
During China's 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and 9th National Special Olympic Games, Guangzhou Gymnasium will host wheelchair basketball with upgraded accessibility. Hall1 features four wheelchair viewing areas (50 seats). Tactile pavingis seamlessly linked to sidewalks and the ramps are held to a maximum 1:12 gradient. Apart from that, an induction loop systemto assisthearing covers 90 percent of seats, and photoluminescent guidance strips are visible up to eight meters at night.
Originally a venue for men's football and rugby at the 2010 Asian Games, the Guangzhou University Town Stadium will host the U‑16 WomenNational Championship and the Para Cross‑Country Roller Skiing events. Lin Zhengxiu, manager of the Fourth Branch of Guangzhou Xie'an Construction Engineering, notes thatto improve the viewing experience, the venue has introduced advanced technologies to build a smart sports center. The AR real-time navigation enables "full venue access via smartphone".
The design also weaves Lingnan cultural elements and natural landscapes into the architecture. Nestled beside the University Town Central Lake Park and adjacent hills, the stadium incorporates Lingnan ink‑wash aesthetics into both architecture and outdoor gardens to make full use of the natural space, creating a low-carbon modern sports complex with Guangdong features.
