When people think of 'golden monkeys', they probably picture a well-known species. However, the 'Yunnan golden monkey' may be less familiar. Despite its name, it doesn't have golden fur, but it is still part of the six golden monkey species. Its most striking feature is its 'fiery red lips', which has intrigued many online.
The Yunnan golden monkey is a rare, first-class protected species in China, also known as the 'Yunnan upward-nose monkey'. These mountain-dwelling creatures live a true 'cloud life', residing at altitudes higher than the base camp of Mount Everest. They are found in the pristine alpine forests of northwest Yunnan and southeast Tibet. The Yunnan golden monkey is known for its calm yet energetic nature. Though large in size, it is surprisingly nimble, moving effortlessly through the treetops as if walking on flat ground. Its graceful movements have earned it the title 'elf of nature'.
Unlike the monkeys on Mount Emei, Yunnan golden monkeys do not scavenge food from tourists. Their diet mainly consists of Usnea moss, tender leaves from coniferous trees, and buds. They eat slowly and delicately, displaying an aristocratic grace in their movements.
