Green transformation and technological empowerment serve as the twin engines driving the renovation of the venues for the 15th Nat

Green transformation and technological empowerment serve as the twin engines driving the renovation of the venues for the 15th National Games. Around 90% of the competition venues are pre-existing facilities, marking this edition of the Games as the one with the fewest newly-built venues in recent years. Sustainability principles, such as energy efficiency, low carbon emissions, environmental protection, and long-term usability, are integrated throughout the entire process.

The Guangdong Olympic Sports Center has retained its signature ribbon-like canopy, evoking the image of flying silk. Modern floodlight projection technology adds dynamic visual effects to the structure. The venue also incorporates a rooftop solar photovoltaic system and cantilevered walkways to harness renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions by 191 tons annually.

After extensive upgrades, the Shenzhen Sports Center Stadium now boasts a multipurpose arena accommodating 16,000 spectators. It features retractable seating, lower-tier stands, accessible seating, and companion seats. Notably, it is China's first large-scale integrated stadium equipped with both a retractable roof and a foldable, movable central screen. The ultra-large screen can transform among dual-sided and four-sided displays, supporting quick transitions across 16 types of major competitions such as basketball, tennis, ice hockey, and gymnastics, significantly enhancing venue adaptability and spectator experience.

The upgrades extend beyond just hardware. The "i Shenzhen Sports" one-stop service platform, custom-designed for the venue, provides services like one-click venue reservations and venue navigation. It also includes a free-viewing system for events, enabling users to record, analyze, and livestream competitions with ease, offering an intelligent, multi-angle viewing experience.

Leveraging the momentum of the Games, cities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), spearheaded by Guangzhou and Shenzhen, are integrating sports with innovation to unleash new drivers of regional growth.

According to data, Guangzhou will host 142 provincial or higher-level events and nearly 200 mass sports activities in 2024. The total sports consumption is expected to reach 63.125 billion yuan, with per capita spending at 3,345.51 yuan, among the highest in the country. During the Asian Cup Table Tennis Tournament, the nearby Shenzhen Universiade Sports Center attracted more than 18,000 visitors per day, demonstrating the growing appeal of the sports economy.

Beyond Guangzhou and Shenzhen, spectators from across the nation will travel in 200 days to Dongguan, the "weightlifting capital," Zhuhai, known for tennis, and Jiangmen, a stronghold for volleyball. Boosted by the Games, the GBA is witnessing a boom in both grassroots sports and high-profile events, opening up new possibilities for economic vitality.

The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (2019) calls for joint efforts to advance regional sports industries and cultivate international and regional signature events. As the first large-scale comprehensive Games co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, the 15th National Games marks a milestone not just for Chinese sports but also for the broader GBA integration effort.

On the institutional side, the three regions have been strengthening coordination through a well-established, four-tier liaison mechanism—"liaison conference, chief liaison officer, liaison officer, joint task force"—creating a mature and efficient communication platform.

On February 23rd, the first-ever cross-border marathon in the Games' history, the 2025 Shenzhen-Hong Kong Marathon and the 15th National Games athletics (marathon) test event, was successfully launched in Shenzhen. The two cities have piloted a joint mechanism for event alignment, featuring triple-layered verification involving facial recognition, wristband-based positioning, and time scoring. The system ensures seamless, contactless, and delay-free clearance of participants, vehicles, and equipment, providing a valuable model for future cross-border sports events.

The pursuit of excellence and breakthroughs is the eternal theme of competitive sports and also the essence of the unique charm of the GBA. As a platform for interaction and integration, the 15th National Games is deepening people-to-people exchanges and accelerating the realization of the GBA's boundless future.
