Signs of a slowing labor market emerged in Singapore during the first quarter of 2025, as the country faced moderating economic growth and escalating global trade tensions, the Ministry of Manpower reported Monday, based on preliminary data.

While the labor market continued to expand, the pace of employment growth has slowed. Total employment increased by 2,300 in the first quarter, a drop compared to the seasonal rise of 7,700 in the fourth quarter of 2024 and the 3,200 increase in the first quarter of 2024.

This slowdown reflects smaller gains in both resident and non-resident employment compared to the previous quarter, according to the ministry.

The moderation in labor demand was particularly apparent in outward-facing sectors. The professional services, manufacturing, and information and communications sectors experienced a decline in resident employment.

Unemployment rates have also shown a slight uptick since December 2024. The ministry further noted that business sentiment had turned more cautious. While more employers were planning to hire and raise wages in December 2024 compared to September 2024, fewer employers now expect to do so in the next three months, as reported in March 2025.
