On the afternoon and evening of April 26th, the large-scale original ethnic dance drama "Odes to Heroes"(Yingge Dance) staged two consecutive performances at Shanghai Culture Square, achieving an over 90% attendance rate and selling out all cultural merchandise. Many viewers exclaimed they wanted to immediately fly to Lingnan after the show.

The dance drama employs non-linear storytelling and symbolic stage designs to fuse traditional culture with modern art. Centered around Yingge Dance, the "Chinese Warrior Dance", it depicts the story of the older generation bearing responsibilities in Nanyang (Southeast Asia) during the 1930s and 1940s, and of the young man Chen Xinyuan inheriting the Yingge Dance tradition. The production highlights the Lingnan people's loyalty to their country, deep attachment to their homeland, and commitment to cultural preservation.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theater. Over the past decade, the theater has delved deeply into Lingnan culture. Its earlier dance drama "Awakening Lion" won the Lotus Award for Dance Drama, the top dance prize in China. The premiere of "Odes to Heroes" in December 2024 was shortlisted for the final round of the 14th Lotus Awards. During its international performances, tickets for the first show sold out within three hours of going on sale, and tickets for subsequent shows also quickly sold out, sparking an "Odes to Heroes" craze.
In 2025, "Odes to Heroes" launched a nationwide tour through 11 cities with its popularity undiminished. It will next perform in Fujian, Guangdong, Jiangxi, and other regions. Since the 2025 Spring Festival, highlights from the production have been featured four times on CCTV, providing a visual and auditory feast for audiences worldwide.
Currently, the dance drama has a Damai score of 9.5/10 and a Douban rating of 8.0/10, and many audience members have watched the show multiple times and are following its tour. As of April 27th, its official account on the Douyin platform has garnered nearly 60 million views, its posts on WeChat Channels have reached 3 million views each, and topics related to the show on RedNote have amassed 5.1 million views. Audiences flood social media with comments like: "This show filled me with reverence for Chinese culture."
