The Cynics developed a philosophy of ethical virtue connected to inner freedom and a realistic perception of (human) nature where paradox plays a key role. In the tradition of Cynicism and Stoicism, Evagrius Ponticus (4ᵗʰ Century) developed an ethics of discipline and anti-conventional lifestyle in order to achieve inner freedom. He suggested a threefold path to a deeper perception of nature, beginning with ethical praxis and then proceeding to a deeper contemplation of nature and of divine presence in nature. Today, his Theoria Physiké, the contemplation of nature, is inspiring new perspectives for a profoundly ecological civilization across borders of language and political systems, where humans are challenged to rediscover a deeper freedom in nature.
