Violets:

Dear Violets,

I write to you today with a message of hope and gratitude.

We should remember to embrace moments of joy, even amid the world’s struggles. And while joy is often harder earned when the landscape is less clear, it is also sweeter, ever more vibrant. Which takes us to the week ahead.

Many of you have already had the privilege of walking across a stage, while some of you are still anticipating the school ceremony celebrating your accomplishments. And then there is Yankee Stadium!

Higher education, the research teaches us, inspires thriving and flourishing. Thanks to your studies at NYU, you are on the path to greater health, prosperity, empathy, and, indeed, happiness.

But what more do you need for happiness? Relationships.

Relationships you had before arriving at NYU, those you will forge in the years ahead, but especially those you built at our beloved university and will continue to cultivate over your lifetime. More than 20 percent of American adults report feeling lonely. Mark these last few days of the academic year by holding onto the force of what NYU has provided you: a life of thinking hard and connecting well.

Faculty and staff at NYU have given their hearts and souls to your development—we witness this every single day. Professors like Adam Ramey, who just won the University-wide Distinguished Teaching Award, described his philosophy as this:

"I encourage my students to explore all ideas. I invite them to my classroom knowing that they can express, challenge, and change their beliefs without fear of mockery, belittlement or condemnation. I create an environment wherein they know that regardless of their political views, religious persuasion or demographic background, my classroom is a place that welcomes each and every one of them."

Our gratitude goes to the faculty, staff, and administrators who provide an outstanding educational experience to you, our students, every single day, posing hard questions, seeking answers to the world’s most vexing challenges, and providing you with the support you need to flourish.

And our congratulations to all our students, but especially our graduates, who inspire hope for the future.

To your life, to happiness and relationships. Join us in celebrating you.
