At sunset on May 12, dozens of foreign tourists enjoyed local dishes at a homestay in Xiehe Township in Zhangjiajie. A family of four from Poland strolled around, appreciating the picturesque idyllic scenery. After a three-day stay, they would leave by plane later that night.
"China is so beautiful. We decided to have a vacation in Zhangjiajie for its spectacular mountains and friendly and passionate people. If I get the chance to come to China again, I will still choose Zhangjiajie to experience the picturesque scenery unseen in Europe," said the Polish guest.
Zhangjiajie has captivated global travelers with its stunning natural landscapes and rich ethnic culture. During the May Day holiday this year, the city greeted nearly 23,000 inbound trips, marking a year-on-year increase of 45.95%. The top five origins of foreign travelers were South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Russia.
Increasingly frequent international flights have further fueled Zhangjiajie's booming inbound tourism market. Data shows that 70% of the foreign travelers entered China through Zhangjiajie airport directly, while more than 80% foreigners traveling through Changsha would pay visits to Zhangjiajie.
As Hunan's second-largest international airport, Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport handled 532,000 international and regional passenger trips in 2024, ranking first among non-provincial capital cities in the central and western regions of China. The proportion of foreign travelers among the inbound and outbound passengers reached 95%, the highest nationwide. At present, the airport operates over 90 international and regional flights weekly, rising 32.4% year on year.
As of May 11, Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport has handled 551,000 passenger trips, marking a 20.14% year-on-year increase. The number of international passenger trips reached 156,000, up 7.61% over last year.
