I’m Liu** from China, thank you for allowing me the five minutes to share a simple story about female empowerment.
It takes 13 hours to fly from m hometown to here, but it took me 30 long years to come all the way from my childhood dirt road to the red carpet of Cannes. In this 3-decade-long odyssey, three key words define who I am.
The first word is brave. In 1991, I was born in a small village in Hebei province of China. As a Child, I didn’t know KFC, but I knew Anderson. My mother, an illiterate woman, who never had a chance to go to school learn to read, determined to fight for her daughter’s education. She opened a store, selling eggs, milk, and salt from morning till night. It was her toil that enabled me to listen to lectures about Plato in nice classroom.
Eventually, I got a master’s degree in law from Peking university, the very best university in China. My mother’s bravery took root in me. Everyone said that girls should be nice, and our best destination is to have a stable job and a happy family, but that’s not where I wanna go. So, despite objections from everyone around me, I signed up for the most popular talent show in China at that time, “Super speaker”. with no experience in public speaking at all, I had nothing but bravery. I loudly questioned women’s fate and eventually rose from being ignored to winning the champion.
The second key word is sincere. When I graduated from PKU, I didn’t choose to become a lawyer like most of my classmates. Instead, I started my own business. I would also like to thank China’s thriving e-commerce and short video platforms, for helping countless women gain opportunities for self-expression and financial independence. I am one of them.
Eight years’ of hard work gained us over 30 million followers on my social media, which is more than the local population of many countries. Every year, over 5 million people make online purchase because of my recommendations. Despite my success, some people still tell me that women lack the courage to manage. But I told them, that my colleagues fought with me and my followers supported me because of my sincerity, not because of masculinity.
The third word of mine is kind. Immediately after I made my first fortune, I fulfilled one of my wishes by donating to a school in my hometown, hoping that more girls would be like me,. rise beyond our family, rise beyond our village, see the world and enjoy the wonders of life. By this year, I have sponsored seven schools and I also finance a help center for stray dogs, and have adopted hundreds of homeless puppies.
Ladies and gentlemen, what kind of female power do we truly need? When we were kids, we played house, wearing wedding dresses, and wished to get married. All of that are important because it makes a woman glad, but the bravery of breaking through ridicule that the sincerity of shaping our own fate, and the kindness of enriching other souls are what make a woman glow. I often ask myself, what mission do we have as human being. In fact, the answer for women is exactly the same as the answer for men. To do what you have to do. To do what you dream to do. And to bring others closer to their dreams. Thank you, let’s fight together.
