ABSTRACT: Aryl iodides are essential synthons in organic synthesis, whose conventional preparations often suffer from poor selectivity or necessitate multistep procedures. Herein, Ye & Liu’s group present a light-driven denitrative iodination as a one-step approach that directly converts nitroarenes to iodoarenes under mild and transition-metal-free conditions. Thisstreamlined method operates in the absence of strong Brønsted acids, ensuring broad functional group tolerance, including esters, cyanogroups, halides, and heterocycles, while also offering operational simplicity and scalability.

The Group of Pro. Fei Ye & Pro. Liang Liu has developed a light-promoted denitrativeiodination that efficiently converts nitroarenes into iodoarenes in a one-step approach under mild and neutral conditions, utilizing simple and readily available reagents, including sodium thiosulfate, water, nitrate salts, and 1,2-diiodoethane. It provides a practical and cost-effective alternative to conventional iodination strategies, offering broad functional group tolerance and operational simplicity. Given the prominence of aryl iodides in synthetic chemistry and biomedical applications, this transition-metal-free protocol provides a practical and sustainable alternative for their preparation.
