西北有地,旱魃为虐,农夫跪叩,祈龙救稼。观祈雨之视频,心忖:若吾生于彼,长于彼,亦将为祈雨之人矣。苏子一生,祈雨为务,凤翔祈雨,黄州祈雨,密州祈雨,徐州祈雨……其祷曰:“丰厥施泽,以苏民困。”祈雨至终,未尝或辍。常州之时,久旱不雨,苏子出黄筌画龙,悬于中堂,数日祈雨,为民请命。

Some parts of the Northwest are experiencing severe drought. Farmers are kneeling on the ground, praying for rain, begging the Dragon King to save the crops. Seeing some videos of these rain-praying scenes, I thought to myself, if I had been born and lived there all my life, I would have been one of those praying for rain too. Su Dongpo’s entire life was a quest for rain. He prayed for rain in Fengxiang, Huangzhou, Mizhou, Xuzhou… He implored, “Let thy bountiful blessings rain down and relieve the people’s suffering.” He prayed for rain until the very last moment of his life. When he was in Changzhou, there was a prolonged drought. Su Dongpo took out a painting of a dragon by the artist Huang Quan and hung it in the main hall, praying for rain for the people for several days in a row.

志刚教授的鱼池死了一条大锦鲤,他思考说,你不爱了,这个世界就不存在了。他每天坐在石槽看小金鱼,小金鱼就活得很好,你注视他,他就活得很精彩给你看;反过来,他对大锦鲤就敷衍了很多,自动喂食器,定期换水。被注视的少了,它就不活了。这个世界,你注视,他就存在。你不注视,他就坍塌了,不管他看起来多么宏大,多么坚强。

志刚教授之鱼池,殒一大锦鲤。教授沉思曰:“汝若不爱,则此界不复存矣。”其每日坐石槽观小金鱼,鱼则活色生香;盖因注目之,鱼乃炫其精彩以报。反观大锦鲤,唯赖自动喂食器、定期换水,鲜得顾盼,竟至殒命。嗟乎!世之存焉,在乎注目与否。若弗视之,纵其庞然坚强,亦必倾塌矣。

Professor Zhigang had a large koi carp die in his fishpond. He reflected: "When you stop caring, the world ceases to exist." Every day he sits by the stone trough and watches the small goldfish, which thrive because of his attention—they live brilliantly to be seen. In contrast, he neglected the large koi, relying on an automatic feeder and regular water changes. With less attention, it perished. "In this world, what you observe exists. What you ignore collapses, no matter how grand or strong it seems."

有几个读过我家风一书的读者不约而同地说,家人相处有共同的行为模式就是家风,良好的家风使人在家就像打卡一样,到了外面则是展示体现自己的家教家风。他们发现,居家生活就是要有日课感,陪伴、饮食、分享,形成日课了,就有精进,出门能够发挥和施展。遗憾的是,不少人居家就是吃饭睡觉刷手机,完全没有修身的日课,没有齐家的日课。

有数读者曾览吾《家风》一书,不期而同言曰:家人相处,共守之行范即谓家风。善之家风,使人于内若循规蹈矩,出外则显其家教门风。彼等察之,居家生活当有日课之感,陪伴、饮食、分享诸事,若成日课,则日有精进,及出,则能展其才德。惜哉,今人多居家唯饭寝刷屏而已,全无修身齐家之日课。

Several readers who have read my book Family Style coincidentally said that the shared behavioral patterns among family members are the family style. A good family style makes people follow a routine at home, and when they go out, it demonstrates their family education and ethos. They found that home life should have a sense of daily practice—companionship, meals, and sharing. When these become daily routines, there is continuous improvement, which can be applied and displayed outside. Unfortunately, many people only eat, sleep, and scroll through their phones at home, with no daily practice for self-cultivation or family management.

十年砍柴兄今年清明节受族人委托,撰写他们李氏由赣至湘始迁祖魁公祭文。祭文说,“维维公元2025年乙巳岁清明,李氏阖族祭于魁公坟前曰:魁公我祖,元季所生。陇西发派,江右躬耕。适彼乐土,亦避刀兵。徙至宝庆,落户止行。……聊备三牲,清酒三樽。祈我祖灵,佑庇子孙。青山巍巍,春水汤汤。孝思不匮,伏维尚飨!“砍柴兄感叹,这样的文字没多少人关注。我相信,读过一遍的人都会有孔子说的体验,慎终追远,民德归厚。

乙巳年清明,十年砍柴兄应族人托,撰李氏自赣迁湘始祖魁公祭文。文曰:“维公元二零二五年乙巳岁清明之期,李氏合族祭于魁公陵前,曰:魁公吾祖,生于元季。陇西发脉,江右躬耕。适彼乐土,亦避刀兵。徙至宝庆,落户止行。……聊备三牲,清酒三樽。祈吾祖灵,佑庇子孙。青山巍巍,春水汤汤。孝思不匮,伏维尚飨!”砍柴兄叹曰,此等文字,鲜有人关注。吾人以为,读者皆点赞孔子,“慎终追远,民德归厚”矣。

In this Qingming Festival, Brother Shinian Kaichai was entrusted by his clan to compose a memorial address for their ancestor Kui Gong, who first migrated from Jiangxi to Hunan in the Li family. The address reads:"On the Qingming Festival of the year 2025 (Yisi year in the lunar calendar), all members of the Li clan offer sacrifices at the grave of Kui Gong, saying: Our ancestor Kui Gong was born in the late Yuan Dynasty. Our lineage originated from Longxi, and he plowed in Jiangyou (Jiangxi). Seeking a land of peace and avoiding wars, he migrated to Baoqing and settled here... We humbly prepare three sacrifices and three goblets of pure wine. We pray for the spirit of our ancestor to bless future generations. The green mountains stand tall, and the spring waters flow vast. May our filial piety never fade. We earnestly hope you will enjoy these offerings!"Brother Kaichai lamented that such writings receive little attention. I believe anyone who reads it will experience what Confucius said: 'Practicing careful attention to the dead and reverence for ancestors leads the people to moral integrity.'

有学者说,在夏天,散步才是正经事。随处慢慢逛,记住空气的温热,风穿过衣袖的鼓荡,河边的水气与植物混合蒸腾出的药草味……人生阅历丰富了,就理解,那些看似飘渺的东西、仿佛无形无质的体验,诸如冬天的松针气味、夏天的海风触感……比寻常有形有质之物更加坚固,只有体验才是永恒的。

有儒者云:夏日散步乃正事也。随意徐行,记空气之温燠,风鼓袖之飒然,河畔水汽与草木混合蒸腾之药草味……人生阅历深矣,则明乎:看似缥缈、无形无质之体验,如冬日松针之气、夏日海风之触,较之寻常有形有质之物,更为坚固。唯体验,方为永恒。

A scholar once said, in summer, taking a walk is the most proper thing to do. Stroll around slowly wherever you like, remember the warmth of the air, the billowing of your sleeves as the wind passes through, the herbal scent rising from the riverbank where water vapor mixes with plants… As life experiences accumulate, one comes to understand that those seemingly ethereal, formless and intangible experiences, such as the scent of pine needles in winter, the touch of the sea breeze in summer… are more solid than ordinary tangible objects. Only experience is eternal.

尽快网络生活让人超越了地域的限制,但地域差异跟时间差异、代际差异一样,仍是不可改变的事实。一个诗人说,到了山西,狗都要午睡;在安徽,麻雀都能喝三两酒;四川的耗子比湖北的九头鸟还要聪明;云南的大象记得20年前的道路,等等。这就是老子说的“人法地”。

夫网络之便,虽使人超脱地域之囿,然则地域之别,犹时间之异、代际之殊,终为不可易之实。有诗人云:入晋,犬亦午憩;至皖,雀可饮三两;蜀鼠较鄂之九头鸟更黠;滇象尚记廿载前之路,等等。此所谓老子“人法地”之谓也。

Although the convenience of the internet allows people to transcend the limitations of geography, regional differences, like temporal and generational differences, remain unchangeable facts. A poet said: in Shanxi, even dogs take naps at noon; in Anhui, sparrows can drink three liang of liquor; rats in Sichuan are smarter than the nine-headed birds of Hubei; elephants in Yunnan remember the roads from 20 years ago, and so on. This is what Laozi meant by “man follows the ways of the Earth.”
