Title:Plant roots actively sense and respond to heterogeneous soil

Roots actively sense and adapt to soil heterogeneity, responding to both internalcues and external conditions. Outer root cell layers react faster to soil changes than inner layers. Elevated abscisic acid (ABA) in vascular tissues strengthens root barriers (exodermis and endodermis), reducing water loss and improving resistance to compacted soil. Ethylene, produced at the root tip, diffuses freely in loose soils but accumulates under compaction, altering root behavior in response

to restricted growth conditions.
