The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) held a regular press conference today to introduce the progress of work on intellectual property rights to support the growth and development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

CNIPA spokesperson Liang Xinxin introduced that, as of November this year, the proportion of enterprises in China's domestic effective invention patents reached 73.5%, an increase of 2.5 percentage points compared over the same period of the previous year. A considerable number of these patents came from SMEs.

The latest survey data shows that in 2024, China's SMEs have become more active in patent innovation, and their protection and utilization capabilities have continued to improve.

First, the patent research and development power of SMEs has increased. In 2024, the proportion of effective invention patents of China's SMEs generated by independent research and development was 75.3%, an increase of 3.9 percentage points over the previous year.

Second, the industrialization level of SMEs' invention patents has continued to improve. In 2024, the industrialization rate of effective invention patents of SMEs in China was 55.1%, 3.6 percentage points higher than the previous year.

Third, the patent protection capability of SMEs has been further improved. In 2024, the proportion of SMEs taking action to protect their rights after experiencing patent infringement was 84.0%, an increase of 1.3 percentage points compared to the previous year. (By Jia Zifan/China Youth Daily)
