From December 5th to 14th this year, the medical team from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University(ZOC) arrived at Hulhumale Hospitalin the Maldives to carry out the fifth phase of the second stage of the China-Maldives Ophthalmology Center cooperation project, bringing hope for restored vision to local patients.

Although the Maldives is famous for its coconut palms and clear blue seas, the region faces a shortage of medical resources, and eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma are prevalent. Hasan, a man over fifty years old, had been struggling with difficulty in daily life due to cataracts in his left eye. He recalled, "Four years ago, I started having problems with my left eye, and I couldn't see clearly. I visited a local clinic, and the doctor recommended surgery, but they couldn't perform it." This time, he finally had the opportunity to undergo surgery with the help of experts from the ZOC.

On the afternoon of December 11th, Professor Lin Haotian, the Director of ZOC, personally performed cataract surgery at Hulhumale Hospital for Hasan and two other patients. The surgery took only 20 minutes, and Hasan's vision problem was quickly resolved. He excitedly said, "Thank you to the Chinese doctors! I'm really lucky!" On the same day, Professor Lin revealed that this was the 666th surgery performed by the ZOC, marking a significant milestone in the successful progress of the project and bringing more hope to local patients.

The limited local medical resources have forced many patients with complex eye diseases to seek treatment abroad. During this visit, the medical team not only performed routine surgeries but also carried out the first-ever microinvasive glaucoma surgeryand macular epiretinal membranepeeling surgery in the Maldives, offering more treatment options for local patients. Additionally, the team brought with them AI-powered digital slit lampsdeveloped by a Chinese team. This "diagnostic device" generated the first-ever anterior segment diagnostic report abroad, providing advanced technological support to Hulhumale Hospital. Local doctors, after learning to use the lamp, are now able to perform initial screenings and diagnoses.

The ZOC was established in 2016 and officially opened in 2020, with the goal of creating an ophthalmology center that will have a lasting impact. Over the past five years, ZOC has sent seven medical teams to the Maldives, treating more than 6,000 patients in total. Through surgical demonstrations, free clinics, and training sessions, the center has helped improve local medical capabilities. Additionally, the center has welcomed Maldivian healthcare professionals to Guangzhou for training.

On December 12th, the summary meeting for the second phase of the cooperation project was held at Hulhumale Hospital. Lin Haotian stated that the project has not only addressed challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases but also advanced the development of eye health in the Maldives through the use of 5G-enabled smart consultation vehicles and AI technology. Looking ahead, the Chinese side will continue to deepen cooperation and jointly plan the third phase of the project, ushering in a new chapter of China-Maldives ophthalmic medical collaboration.
