Guoqing Temple is a place where one can shed worldly worries and return to inner peace. Far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life, the temple is surrounded by lush greenery and ancient yellow walls, filled with the fragrance of flowers and incense. With every step, the scenery shifts, immersing visitors in the tranquility of a hidden monastery deep in the mountains. The serene atmosphere compels one to slow down, hold their breath, and experience a fleeting moment of profound inner peace and clarity.
Built in 598 AD during the Sui Dynasty, Guoqing Temple is the birthplace of the Tiantai school of Buddhism. It is regarded as one of China's four great Buddhist temples, alongside Lingyan Temple in Jinan, Qixia Temple in Nanjing, and Yuquan Temple in Dangyang. Unlike traditional temples with rigid, symmetrical layouts, Guoqing Temple is built along the mountain slopes, connected by winding corridors that link over 600 ancient structures. Walking through its maze-like paths, one often experiences the delightful surprise of sudden scenic openings, as if stepping into another world.
Just outside the temple stands the Pagoda of Gratitude, which was built in the Sui Dynasty. Despite suffering damage over the centuries, it has remained standing for over a thousand years, silently witnessing the passage of the seasons. To the right of the Mahavira Hall, a 1,400-year-old plum tree still flourishes. Planted by a revered monk of the Sui Dynasty, it has withstood the test of time, remaining vibrant today. It blooms for only half a month each year, and once missed, one must wait another year to witness its fleeting beauty. As the 1,400-year-old plum blossoms unfold amidst the morning bells and evening drums, one can truly feel the romance of a journey through time.
