Good afternoon, dear professor and classmates. I am honored to stand here and share some of my views with you. My theme is: good fences make good neighbors.

It is best for neighbors to maintain a positive relationship when they do not invade or damage each other's land. The proverb was popularized by Robert Frost's 1914 poem, "Mending Wall".

So what does a good fence really mean? In terms of space, it means the boundary where people live apart from each other. As far as relationships are concerned, it means a mode in which people communicate for the common good without invading each other's privacy.

I quite agree with that. Personal space is of great significance to modern human society. For example, there is an old Chinese saying: "There is a road between walls, friendship will last forever." Even the most intimate friends should keep a certain distance, giving others a privacy space can also make the relationship more stable and long-term.

Similarly, maintaining good distances and borders is a way for countries to get along with each other. The Sino Soviet border conflict, the Korean War and the Middle East war are all tragedies between countries. If the border is not clear, it will bring great misfortune and disaster to the people on the border of the two countries.

To sum up, both micro and macro, "good fence" plays an important role in "good neighbor". It refers not only to material space, but also to social relations. Therefore, if we want to develop a harmonious and peaceful relationship with the people around us, the first element is to build a "fence".
