Welcome to the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2025. Every year around this time, members of the Boao Family and other stakeholders are gathered here in Boao, not just to renew friendship & demonstrate solidarity, but to reaffirm the fundamental principles guiding our common Asia, and recommit to the mission & purposes of Asian economic integration and common development. It’s an occasion for Asia to re-unite under a shared vision for a shared future in an era of profound & transformative changes. It’s an occasion to move ahead with increased courage, will & actions on the ground.

The Year 2025 will see such changes manifest themselves in both challenges and opportunities. Eroded trust, intensifying rivalry and a rapidly deteriorating global security landscape threaten to turn the world into a more dangerous and divided place. With half of the world’s population and over 70 countries & areas having new leadership in place, the year 2025 must gear up for more complexities, new developments in unilateralism & protectionism, and greater shocks on world peace and global development, which has given rise to renewed worries, concerns & anxieties in Davos, Munich, quite a few international conferences and the wider global community.

In Asia and in Boao, however, we are seeing a different picture and sounding a different note. Asia is not just leading the world in economic development as the chief growth engine and contributor. It is emerging as a technology pioneer and innovation hub, with impressive advances, eye-catching breakthroughs & down-to-earth application in AI and renewables. It is a frontrunner and star performer in alleviating poverty, combating desertification, and progressing on other SDGs, setting inspiring examples for its developing peers to follow. In particular, it is a leading voice for multilateralism, free trade and globalization. The Asian Miracle, to a large extent, is the miracle of globalization and deep integration with the world economy. The peaceful environment that makes the Asian Miracle possible is secured and safeguarded by the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, a just & equitable international order, and the multilateral system with the United Nations as the core.

Asia is not alone in supporting and defending a multilateral approach to the challenges we face. The Global South has taken the center stage as a strong voice for multilateral coordination & cooperation, not unilateral actions, in face of global challenges such as conflicts, poverty and climate change. Broader representation & bigger say of Global South countries are injecting vigor and new impetus to a more inclusive, responsive & effective multilateral system.

The UN Summit of the Future marked a landmark moment at the global level, where countries and leaders were again united around a hard-won consensus on how to deliver a better present and safeguard the future. The consensus is universal, simple, clear and unequivocal. Our challenges are deeply interconnected and far exceed the capacity of any single state alone. They can only be addressed collectively, through strong and sustained international cooperation guided by trust and solidarity for the benefit of all.

As the premier forum for Asia and emerging markets, with a mission of Asian economic integration and common development, BFA has been firmly behind multilateralism, free trade and globalization. We are committed to promoting understanding, exchanges & dialogues with the goal of re-building trust among countries, leaders & peoples, and rekindling international cooperation. As an important follow-up of the UN Summit, the BFA Annual Conference 2025 will bring together more than 2000 government, business, intellectual & opinion leaders from Asia and the world to reaffirm and deliver on the commitments & pledges made last September.

Please join us at this timely and meaningful dialogue. Challenges are big. Stakes are heavy. Expectations are high. As leaders, we’re duty-bound to lead in times of uncertainty, severity & complexity. Let’s demonstrate vision & leadership and make a real difference in the way and direction the world changes.
