Working Together to Address Common Challenges, Towards the Shared Future

——Boao Forum for Asia held the BFA Seoul Conference

On November 22, the Boao Forum for Asia Seoul Conference was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, under the theme “Towards the Shared Future”. Mr. Zhang Jun, Secretary General of the Boao Forum for Asia, delivered welcome remarks and presided at the Opening. Mr. Han Duck-soo, Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Chairman of the BFA Board of Directors, Mr. Zhou Xiaochuan, Vice-Chairman of the BFA Board of Directors, delivered remarks. Delegates from multiple countries including government, business, academia, media and international organizations attended the Conference. All participants agreed that we should rebuild trust, strengthen cooperation and work together towards the shared future.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo expressed that the Conference organised by the Boao Forum for Asia marks the first of its kind held in Korea since six years ago, and that we have witnessed a sea change in almost all spheres of life throughout Asia and the rest of the world. The global security landscape has clearly deteriorated, and the UN Security Council is brought into question on its capacity to effectively prevent and resolve conflicts. The Sustainable Development Goals targets are currently on track, and the rise of generative AI technology is reshaping the trajectory of economic development. We have reached this critical juncture where international solidarity and cooperation are being tested. Under this circumstance, the theme “Towards a Shared Future” is in line with the current situation, profound and timely. Prime Minister expressed his hope that under the auspices of the Boao Forum, an essential platform in the region that brings together great minds from governments, businesses, and academia, we will start our collective journey forward to addressing the problems and challenges together. A “shared future” can only be achieved when no nation, region, or individual is left behind. Korea is in its pursuit of collaboration with emerging economies and has been orchestrating a series of summit meetings partnering with the Pacific Islands, Africa, ASEAN, and Central Asia. Korea remains committed to empowering women and youth, amplifying their voices and incorporating their perspectives into policy, and plays a leading role in global efforts to establish norms and governance in AI, to build a prosperous future. Korea will indeed host the 2025 APEC Summit in the southeastern city of Gyeongju, under the theme of “Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: Connect, Innovate, and Prosper”. President Mr. Yoon Seok-youl encouraged the G20 world leaders to join the effort in Asia’s shared freedom, resilience, peace, and prosperity. Our collective efforts will contribute to leading us to a shared future of well-being and prosperity for all.

BFA Chairman Mr. Ban Ki-moon stated that a lot has changed and taken place, however, none of these changed our belief in the timeless value of solidarity, cooperation, multilateralism and globalization. We need the United Nations to safeguard peace, need dialogue, diplomacy and negotiation to settle disputes, need the Paris Agreement and collective efforts by all national governments, as well as need globalization and free trade to improve efficiency and close the gap. Chances are good that, after the Summit of the Future, we will be well on course towards the better and more sustainable future. The upcoming Annual Conference 2025 of the Boao Forum for Asia will be held on March 25-28 in Boao, Hainan. It will be another important occasion to get the right message across, build consensus, explore solutions, and push for policies and actions at the national, regional and global levels, for a meaningful dialogue on Asia, the wider world and our shared future of sustained peace & sustainable development.

BFA Vice-Chairman Mr. Zhou Xiaochuan stated that the world today is fraught with conflicts and confrontations, the international order is being challenged and ruined, the process of economic globalization is hindered. Today's conference is timely and necessary. We do not want a future destroyed by continuous wars, conflicts, and confrontation, a future characterized by isolationism, trade protectionism and economic fragmentation, a future with a burning Earth and a devastated environment, a future where humanity is harmed by AI, and a future where certain countries or generations are left behind. The Boao Forum for Asia would like to invite all parties in Asia to resolve disputes through peaceful means, showcasing the way Asian countries coexist, deepen economic integration through the implementation of free trade agreements and infrastructure connectivity, bridge the climate finance and clean technology gap, moving towards green development, embrace technological innovation and actively participate in AI governance, and encourage the youth of Asia to shape our future together.

BFA Secretary General Mr. Zhang Jun expressed that, the BFA Seoul Conference is an important follow-up to the UN Summit of the Future. We are living in a world of profound and transformational changes and the international order is being reshaped by multiple factors. We are faced with growing instabilities and uncertainties, and we are at a loss for the right way forward. Deglobalization, unilateralism and protectionism stand in the way of an open world economy, cooperation & integration, and we are way behind and woefully off-track in achieving SDGs and the 2030 Agenda. The international community is in a direction crisis, a trust crisis, and a governance crisis. We have come to realize that we are in one same boat with one shared future, and that multilateralism is the right way forward. Asia must be an important player in sticking to the multilateral approach, rebuild trust and improve global governance, working towards an open world economy and deepening regional economic integration, exploring new growth drivers, leveraging science, technology and innovation (STI) for the benefit of people, and strengthen international cooperation and governance on AI and other emerging technologies, as well as pursuing sustainable development, accelerating the UN 2030 Agenda, and achieving green and high-quality development.

The Boao Forum for Asia Seoul Conference also held the sessions “Towards a Shared Future”, “AI & the Future of Mankind” and “Future of the World: The Role of Women and Youth” on the same day. The sessions conducted wide and deep discussions on addressing global challenges, narrowing gender and intergenerational gaps, promoting sustainable growth and other topics.
