Abstract
The year 2024 marks the publication of the ninth volume of Communication and the Public (CAP), ushering in our 10th year. As we reflect on this journey, 2024 has been a year of growth and achievement for CAP. We are delighted to share our key milestones (see Appendix 1):
• Scholarly Impact: CAP has continued its upward trajectory, achieving a CiteScore of 3.2 in SCOPUS and maintaining a Q2 Communication Journal ranking. We have also earned a Journal Impact Factor (JIF) of 1.2 in Web of Science, positioning the journal as a Q2 ESCI Communication Journal. In addition, CAP has been recognized in the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ SCI Journal listings and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
• Submissions: In 2024, the number of original submissions reached a record high of 251, reflecting a remarkable growth of 53.9% compared to 2023.
• Global Engagement: We engaged authors from 56 countries and regions in 2024, marking a 33.3% increase from the previous year.
• Open Access: CAP remains committed to Open Access publishing, eliminating article processing charges to ensure broader visibility and accessibility for our authors. This initiative not only enhances the dissemination of knowledge but also fosters a more inclusive and resilient academic community.

A matter of time: The texture of China’s digital green public culture

Abstract
On the 30th anniversary of China’s internet, this article is written in response to students’ concerns about the tangibility of public spheres in authoritarian contexts. Using texture as a conceptual linchpin, I propose to shift focus from spatiality to temporality of China’s digital green public cultures to foreground the lived experiences of ordinary people in a time of precarity. I start with empirical observations on recent contributions to Chinese online green public culture: kepu (科普 popularizing science) vloggers, coal miners as content creators, and local communities’ actions and everyday conversations. I then elaborate on texture as materiality over time in dialogues with previous studies. The article hopes to provoke more studies on the complex of publics/public spheres other than their spatial forms.
值此中国互联网诞生30周年之际,本文回应了学生们对在集中统筹决策机制下公共领域可触及性的关注。以“纹理”(texture)为概念枢纽,作者提议将研究重点从空间性转向中国数字绿色公共文化的时间性,以凸显普通人在不稳定时期的生活经验。首先通过实证观察,分析近年来中国在线绿色公共文化的几个重要现象,包括科普(kepu)视频博主、煤矿工人作为内容创作者,以及地方社区的行动与日常对话。随后,结合既有研究,进一步探讨“纹理”如何体现为跨时间维度的物质性。本文希望激发更多研究,关注公共/公共领域的复杂性,而不仅仅是其空间形式。
Scalable intimacy: Rethinking intimate sociality and its problem of scale in digital China

Abstract
With the development of the Internet in China, people have increasingly turned to digital communication and networking tools for personal connections and social relations. From messaging and dating apps to microblogging and live-streaming platforms, mediated forms of sociality constitute a significant part of people’s intimate lives. Scholarly works on modern and contemporary China have shown how practices and politics of intimacy are formulated and contested against the backdrop of the tensions between the residual culture of Confucianism, the socialist ideological regime, and China’s participation in global capitalism. On the contrary, research on global network societies has foregrounded the role of information and media technologies in mediating intimacy with conceptual frameworks such as programmed sociality and networked intimacy. Bridging these two areas of research, this essay attempts to understand how intimate sociality is configured within China’s burgeoning digital economy and culture. It first provides a review of previous works on forms of intimacy and sociality mediated by network technologies ranging from mobile phones to online dating. Using the popularity of live streaming in current-day China as a case study, this essay then introduces the problem of “scale” to consider how intimacy is mediated at scale with Internet-based media technologies and discuss how scalability shapes intimate lives in Chinese society as a shared rationale behind modernization, network technologies, and new forms of economies. This essay proposes the concept of scalable intimacy to move beyond the platform-centered approach and develop a more contextualized framework for understanding intimate sociality in digital China.
随着中国互联网的发展,人们越来越多地依赖数字通信和社交工具来建立个人联系和社交关系。从即时通讯和约会应用到微博和直播平台,媒介化的社交形式已经成为人们亲密生活的重要组成部分。现代和当代中国的学术研究表明,在儒家文化的残余、社会主义意识形态体制与中国融入全球资本主义的张力背景下,亲密关系的实践与政治在不断形成和争议。与此相对,全球网络社会的研究则突出了信息和媒体技术在调解亲密关系中的作用,提出了如“程序化社交性”和“网络化亲密关系”等概念框架。本文试图桥接这两个研究领域,探索在中国蓬勃发展的数字经济与文化中,亲密社交如何被配置。文章首先回顾了之前关于网络技术调解的亲密关系和社交形式的研究,涵盖了从手机到在线约会等多种媒介。以当今中国直播的流行为案例,文章引入了“规模”(scale)问题,探讨如何通过基于互联网的媒体技术在大规模上调解亲密关系,并讨论可扩展性如何作为现代化、网络技术和新经济形式的共享理性,塑造中国社会中的亲密生活。本文提出了“可扩展亲密关系”的概念,旨在超越平台中心主义的方法,发展出一个更具情境性的框架,用以理解数字中国中的亲密社交。

The influence of visual and textual frames on people’s perception of migrants

Abstract
This study investigated how the combination of textual and visual frames influences the attribution of responsibility for arrest and deportation of undocumented migrants and empathy. A 3 visual frame: (no photo, stereotypical photo, counter-stereotypical photo) × 2 textual frame: (episodic, thematic) between-subjects online experiment revealed that including a counter-stereotypical photograph in both episodic and thematic news stories had a positive effect on empathy for undocumented migrants but did not affect responsibility for arrest and deportation. Adding a stereotypical photograph to an episodic news story significantly reduced societal responsibility for arrest and deportation and decreased the level of empathy.

Breaking the disability: Turkish disabled athletes’ self-presentation performances on Instagram

Abstract
Despite the abundance of studies exploring athletes’ self-presentation on social media, there is a notable scarcity of research focused on the self-presentation performances of disabled athletes within these digital spaces. This study investigates the self-presentation performances of disabled athletes representing Turkey in international competitions, on Instagram. By employing a netnographic approach, 645 highlighted stories from the Instagram of 5 athletes (female = 3 and male = 2) were subjected to analysis. The findings of the study reveal a distinction: Female athletes tend to emphasize their on-stage performances, whereas male athletes direct attention to their off-stage performances. In their on-stage performances, athletes gravitate toward showcasing posts related to awards earned from competitions. Conversely, in their off-stage performances, they opt to highlight familial and interpersonal relationships. This study has determined that disabled athletes prefer to highlight their on-stage performances on Instagram. This platform functions as a realm of validation for their accomplishments.

Differential gains from news use in Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe: Variations in the moderating influence of political talk on engagement

Abstract
A limited but growing body of research has explored the role of media and communication in cultivating engaged citizens in the new and established democracies in Sub-Saharan Africa. Using representative data from the World Values Survey, this study advances the existing research by examining the differential gains model across four countries that differ in terms of democratization, including Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe. Findings suggest that the moderating effect of political talk on the association between news use and political engagement likely varies across countries that differ in terms of democratization. Specifically, we find support for the differential gains model across all forms of political engagement in Kenya, limited support in Nigeria and Ethiopia, and no support for the model in Zimbabwe. Implications for theory and suggestions for future inquiry are discussed.
