On March 26, State Grid Nanyang Power Supply Company dispatched maintenance personnel to conduct a special inspection of the 220kV Dengzhou Substation in Nanyang City. This was one of the many initiatives undertaken by the company to reinforce its operational foundation, enhance equipment reliability, and reduce the risk of line failure and outages.
With the arrival of spring, the rising temperatures and increasing rainfall have presented multiple challenges to distribution lines, including rapid tree growth, moisture-related equipment issues, and frequent bird-related disturbances. To mitigate outage risks and ensure reliable power supply, the company has implemented a series of targeted measures. First, insulation spraying has been deployed to strengthen infrastructure. Using insulation coating technology, the company applies protective insulation to exposed components of equipment that span forested areas, farmland, and residential zones, all without interrupting power supply. This prevents short circuits caused by frequent spring rains and fast-growing branches that may come into contact with or rub against conductors, thereby improving insulation levels. Second, fault location capabilities have been enhanced to increase efficiency. Advanced high-precision fault indicators have been installed at critical points, such as key branch lines and interconnection switches, to monitor current and voltage changes in real time. In the event of a grounding or short circuit, the indicators immediately send fault current and voltage data to frontline maintenance personnel, accelerating fault localization and reducing repair times. Third, bird deterrent technology has been adopted to eliminate hidden risks. Drawing on previous experience, the company has installed new bird-repellent devices in areas with frequent bird activity, such as nesting and droppings. These devices release aversive scents to drive birds away, preventing them from nesting on power towers and reducing the risk of discharges, flashovers, and short circuits.
To date, State Grid Nanyang Power Supply Company has completed insulation spraying at 32 locations, installed more than 80 sets of high-precision fault indicators, and deployed over 230 bird-repellent devices. Going forward, the company will continue advancing five key special initiatives, including insulation spraying and "three-span" risk mitigation, accelerate the construction of self-healing lines, and actively implement a proactive maintenance approach. By integrating smart inspection technologies such as drone patrols, the company aims to enhance its comprehensive operation and maintenance capabilities and ensure the safe and reliable operation of the power grid during the spring inspection period.
