On the morning of March 27, 2025, the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) hosted a panel discussion on “Maintaining Global Supply Chain Stability: The Role of Connectivity.” Albert PARK, Chief Economist and Director General of the Economic Research and Development Impact Department (ERDI) at the Asian Development Bank (ADB), shared his insights on the strengths and challenges of Asia’s supply chain.

Mr. PARK presented an overview of the current situation. Many around the worldare discussing deglobalization, yet regional economic integration in Asia continues to deepen, with China at its core.

Mr. PARKhighlighted two key strengths of Asia’s supply chain. First, strong leaderships in Asia have maintained an open and forward-looking trade approach while fostering balanced relations between East and West. Second, the region benefits from deep economic integration, which further enhances its resilience and efficiency.

Mr. PARK carefully analyzed the existing problems. First, while Asia continues to sign free trade and digital economy agreements, these agreements often lack depth and broad coverage. Second, free trade agreements are frequently underutilized across the region, partly due to insufficient support for enterprise capacity building. Third, inconsistent rules of origin and other barriers complicate regional integration.

Mr. PARK advised governments in the region to remain open to multilateral trade and investment, and to prioritize the development of the digital economy, ensuring that all participants can benefit from the opportunities brought by technological progress.
