On the evening of March 27, the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) hosted a roundtable on“Accelerating the Implementation of SDGs: Next Steps”. BAN Ki-moon, Chairman of BFA Board and the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, delivered a keynote speech on accelerating the implementation of SDGs.
Mr. BAN reflected on the historic adoption of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement, a proud milestone in multilateralism that united global leaders behind a shared vision for sustainable development. While progress has been made in areas like healthcare and clean energy, Mr. BAN expressed concern that only 17% of SDGs targets are on track, with many stalled or even regressed. With just five years remaining, skepticism is growing, but Mr. BAN emphasized that the goals remain essential, as they address fundamental human rights and planetary survival.
Mr. BANunderscored the urgency of action, citing the recent UN summit where leaders recommitted to accelerating the SDGs through 13 bolder measures. He stressed the need for tangible efforts: ending conflicts that have displaced 120 million people, closing the $4 trillion SDG financing gap, and strengthening multilateral partnerships.
In conclusion, Mr. BANhighlighted 2025 as a pivotal year, coinciding with the UN’s 80th anniversary and key summits on financing and social development. He urged collective action to fulfill promises of sustainable development, making 2025 a productive and fruitful year.
