"I will return. I plan to visit more cities and come back to see my master, Coach Liang," said Darren Watkins Jr., better known as IShowSpeed, or simply Speed, during his live stream. His tone was unusually quiet, a stark contrast to his usual high-energy persona, which earned him the nickname "Hyperthyroid Bro" from Chinese netizens. His recent trip to China has captivated millions of viewers globally.
The coach who has made a lasting impression on "Hyperthyroid Bro" ,the internet sensation, is Liang Xiaolong, a senior instructor at the International Teaching Department of the Shaolin Kung Fu Center in Henan Province. Their unexpected encounter catapulted Liang Xiaolong to fame, earning him a massive following.
With his deep Kung Fu skills, calm demeanor, and humble nature, Liang Xiaolong has earned widespread praise from netizens, who refer to him as "Master" and "the Unseen Kung Fu Sage".
In response to all the praise, Liang Xiaolong said, "I'm just an ordinary Kung Fu coach. My goal has always been to help more people understand and appreciate Kung Fu."
An unexpected encounter
"Come join us to learn Baduanjin(Eight-Section Brocade)! We'll be live at 3 p.m. today—see you then!" On April 3rd, when I met Liang Xiaolong at the Shaolin Kung Fu Center, he was recording a preview for his live stream. He spoke to the camera with ease, looking both natural and confident.
The Kung Fu Center, where Liang Xiaolong teaches, has a history of 37 years. It's here that Shaolin Kung Fu made its mark on the world. Kung Fu enthusiasts from all over the globe come here to experience it.
It was right here at the Center that "Hyperthyroid Bro" watched by millions worldwide, learned Kung Fu. Today, the courtyard has returned to its usual quietness, but the buzz online continues. Liang Xiaolong is still being followed by countless netizens.
"Recently, I've been live-streaming almost every day, answering questions from fans and encouraging them to join me for some workouts." Suddenly thrust into the spotlight, Liang Xiaolong was initially a little surprised by the attention, but just a few days later, he's already adjusted and handling it with ease.
Browsing through his video account, you'll still find several Shaolin Kung Fu videos shot a few years ago. This was also an attempt by the Center to promote Kung Fu culture via short videos, but it didn’t attract much attention at the time.
As the saying goes, "When you least expect it, a branch may sprout from a willow." This unplanned encounter with "Hyperthyroid Bro", without any prior design, unexpectedly brought a huge surge of attention to Liang Xiaolong and the Center. Even he admitted that he never saw it coming.
"That day, as soon as the class ended, I was called over. It was just like when I'm hosting foreign guests or a group. Before that, I had no clue who he was." Liang Xiaolong said frankly.
From the basic horse stance to the Shaolin Five-Step Fist, Liang Xiaolong patiently taught every move and strike, with no pretense or half-heartedness. In fact, every year he provides instruction for thousands of students from across the country, along with Kung Fu enthusiasts of all background. Whether they know him or not, whether they stay for a few days or just a few hours, he treats everyone the same.
During that global live-stream, "Hyperthyroid Bro" decided to try Shaolin "breaking" technique, a form of qigong designed to enhance one's resistance to impact. However, when the stick struck his body, the pain was so intense that he curled up and rolled on the ground.
"It's pain, but it's life; It's pain, but it's Shaolin; It's pain, but it's Kung Fu; It's pain, but it's you."
Liang Xiaolong stepped forward, hugged him, and his words in English stunned everyone: It's pain, but it's life. It's pain, but it's Shaolin. It's pain, but it's Kung Fu. It's pain, but it's you.
"Pain is the Dao, and the Dao gives birth to life; pain is the essence of Zen, and only by grasping this can one enter Shaolin..." An insightful netizen reinterpreted Liang's words, giving it an intelligent twist, rich in philosophical depth and Zen wisdom.
After reading the comments from netizens, Liang Xiaolong said he was a bit shy about all the praise. "When I saw him in so much pain, I really had to rack my brain to come up with something in my limited English to comfort him, ease his pain, and strengthen his will. The way the netizens interpreted it was really impressive."
Liang was as humble as netizens described. He kept saying in the interview that this incident was simply a matter of chance. "Any other coach at the Center would have done the same."
"I'm just doing my job, but having the chance to show Chinese Kung Fu to a wider audience and spread Kung Fu culture makes me feel incredibly lucky and proud," said Liang Xiaolong.
A lifelong devotion to Kung Fu
Although it wasn't a holiday, the Shaolin Temple was still bustling with visitors. Amid the crowds, the occasional loud, powerful shouts of the students echoed from the training center. As Liang Xiaolong walked past the training ground with the reporter, he stopped for a moment to watch. Years ago, he had been one of them.
Liang Xiaolong comes from a family deeply rooted in Kung Fu. He began formal training at the age of 11 under the guidance of his father, with Liang Yiquan, renowned as a Shaolin master, serving as his senior mentor.
"Kung Fu practice requires enduring pains and hardships. To perfect a single move, repeated falls and rises are inevitable, often leaving the body bruised and battered." He vividly recalls his intense training during his youth, a memory he now shares to inspire his students.
After graduating from the Kung Fu and Ethnic Sports program at Tianjin Sports University, Liang Xiaolong traveled to Zurich, Switzerland, where he worked as a Kung Fu coach at a local Chinese Kung Fu school. "I picked up my broken English during that time," he joked.
Roger Müller, the owner of the school and a senior disciple of Liang Xiaolong, has a deep passion for Chinese Kung Fu and culture. He has visited China many times to train under the guidance of Liang's father.
"Roger's passion for Kung Fu and the enthusiasm of the Swiss students have given me a deep sense of the global impact of Chinese Kung Fu and culture," said Liang Xiaolong. " Kung Fu is not only a bridge for cultural exchange between China and the world, but also a window through which more people can come to appreciate and embrace China's rich traditions.
Driven by this belief, Liang devoted himself to each student, sharing with them the origins of Chinese Kung Fu, legendary stories of its masters, and insights into his hometown. In doing so, he forged strong bonds of friendship with them.
"When I returned to China, they all came to bid me farewell. Many gave me Alpine crystal as a symbol of friendship, a bond as eternal and unchanging as the crystal itself," Liang Xiaolong recalled.
When "Hyperthyroid Bro" completed his training and wanted to pay Liang Xiaolong as a token of thanks, Liang politely declined, saying, "We became friends through Kung Fu. As friends, money isn't necessary. Kung Fu connects us and makes the world one family…"
Born in the 1980s, he has worked at the Shaolin Kung Fu Center in Henan province for 16 years, teaching Kung fu and sharing his knowledge with students from all over the world.
"What does Kung Fu mean to you?" the reporter asked. Liang Xiaolong thought for a moment and said, "Kung Fu reflects my understanding of the world. It's my work, and through it, I've made a lot of friends. I hope more people can learn about China through it."
Stepping into the Spotlight
"Master Liang, get more rest and don't push yourself too hard."
"Coach Liang seems to have lost weight."
"Are you offering classes this summer? I want to learn Kung Fu too!"
"You’re so handsome."
…
On April 7th, Liang Xiaolong’s live stream was so popular that these comments from netizens were buzzing with excitement.
Liang Xiaolong, dressed in a sharp black Kung Fu uniform, demonstrated the five basic hand moves of Shaolin Kung Fu. With his professional and detailed explanations, the live stream—joined by other instructors from the Center—quickly transformed into an online Kung Fu class, and the viewer count soared.
Attending classes, filming videos, giving interviews, and hosting live streams... Nowadays, Liang Xiaolong is "tired but happy". He feels deeply touched and warmed by the concern from netizens. And as more people start to take an interest in Kung Fu and develop a love for it thanks to him, all the hardships are easily forgotten.
“Chinese martial arts aren't just about flashy moves and fancy techniques. I want more people to truly understand what Kung Fu is all about – its wisdom in using martial arts to prevent conflict, the idea of overcoming strength with softness, and the spirit of perseverance, respect for teachers, and deep traditions. Hopefully, Kung Fu can become a key for people around the world to better understand China," said Liang Xiaolong.
Starting as a teacher at a small center and now a viral teacher with millions of online followers, Liang Xiaolong is getting closer to his dream.
