The increasing focus on carbon neutrality has spurred research into mitigating CO₂ emissions from energy-intensive industries, yet emissions from organic wastes and wastewater remain understudied. Electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction offers a promising solution by converting waste-derived CO₂ into value-added chemicals. This study explores the synthesis of nickel single-atom catalysts using protein-rich wastewater as a cost-effective carbon matrix. Protein's ability to bind heavy metals, including nickel, enables the creation of stable nickel single-atom catalysts, which exhibit high selectivity for CO production. The research also addresses mass transfer limitations in traditional electrolysis by integrating Ni SACs into nanofibers via electrospinning to synthesize an integrated gas diffusion electrode. This approach not only converts waste-derived CO₂ into valuable products but also reclaims organic matters and heavy metals from wastewater, contributing to a closed carbon loop and potential negative emissions in wastewater treatment.
