喜讯!The recently released Fortune China ESG Impact List recognized GEM for its industry-leading ESG practices. As a global leader in new energy materials and the circular economy, GEM regards sustainable development as its corporate lifeline. Through initiatives such as building a full life-cycle value chain for new energy and pioneering a flexible internationalization strategy, GEM has achieved major breakthroughs in the green industrial chain, establishing itself as a model for ESG excellence among multinational enterprises.▲ GEM Listed on Fortune China's 2025 ESG Impact List▲ GEM Listed on Fortune China's 2025 ESG Impact ListGEM’s Full Life-Cycle Value Chain for New Energy: Advancing Global Circular Economy and Carbon GoalsSince 2015, GEM has taken the lead in proposing a full life-cycle value chain for new energy, covering battery recycling – cascade reuse – raw material regeneration – material remanufacturing – battery reassembly. As a global example linking recyclers, battery manufacturers, automakers, and consumers, GEM supports the implementation of the global battery passport initiative. To date, GEM has established targeted circular cooperation with over 900 partners worldwide.▲ GEM’s Full Life-Cycle Value Chain for New EnergyIn response to global challenges such as low disassembly efficiency and inadequate metal recovery, GEM pioneered CTP battery pack full-process de-gluing and dismantling technology, achieving a 92% disassembly yield (industry average: 80%) and 100% de-gluing efficiency. It has realized recovery rates exceeding 99% for nickel, cobalt, and manganese, and ≥95% for lithium. A demonstration line with a 10,000-ton capacity now directly produces battery-grade lithium carbonate.GEM operates 16 recycling and new energy material production facilities across eight provinces in China, as well as in South Africa, South Korea, and Indonesia. Centered around major Chinese cities, GEM has built an "urban mining" network spanning over 3,000 kilometers. Annually, it processes over 10% of China’s used batteries, 6% of its end-of-life vehicles, and recovers nickel equivalent to 20% of the nation’s primary production, making GEM a key driver of circular economy development and green transition.

In 2024, GEM’s “urban mining” operations reduced carbon emissions by 1.11 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 54.61%, equivalent to planting 50.29 million trees. This achievement highlights GEM’s leadership in resource recycling and contributes a Chinese solution to the global green transition of the new energy industry.

GEM’s Flexible Globalization Strategy: Integrating Chinese and Indonesian Industry, Technology, and Culture

GEM founder Professor Xu Kaihua has emphasized that Indonesia is hotspot for Chinese investment, but Chinese companies must also ask: What can we leave behind for Indonesia? His answer: use China’s advanced technology and education to benefit Indonesia and strike a balance between business gains and social contribution.

Since 2019, GEM has led the establishment of the Indonesian Government – GEM – CSU Joint Engineering Master and PhD’s International Training Class. It has expanded from a single metallurgy program to three majors: metallurgy, rail transit, and international trade, and from 30 to 100 students per batch. So far, it has trained 183 Indonesian master's and Ph.D. engineering students, creating a new model for sustained, high-level engineering talent development and cultural-educational cooperation between China and Indonesia.

On August 28, 2024, GEM launched the China-Indonesia Joint Research Laboratory for New Energy Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at Bandung Institute of Technology (Hereinafter referred to as: China–Indonesia Joint Research Laboratory), investing USD 30 million in partnership with ITB and CSU. This marked a shift in China-Indonesia cooperation from infrastructure to technological innovation.

The China-Indonesia Joint Research Laboratory features 12 research divisions and 2 pilot engineering centers, equipped with over 300 sets of cutting-edge instruments. As a world-class research hub in metallurgy and new energy materials, it advances technologies in mineral processing, material development, recycling, environmental remediation, and sustainable green tech, helping elevate Indonesia’s R&D to global standards and serving as a premier center for talent cultivation.

In just eight months, over 30 postgraduate researchers and postdocs have completed more than 30 projects, filed over 150 patent applications, and welcomed 1,000+ researchers from more than ten countries—China, Indonesia, Germany, Canada, Italy, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and others—demonstrating the success of China’s technology export model under the Belt and Road Initiative. Next, the China–Indonesia Joint Research Laboratory will bring in global experts in new energy materials to achieve the following three major goals:

Goal 1: Develop critical technologies and world-class scientific results—100 innovations per year, 500 patent filings annually, and 3,000 patents by 2030.

Goal 2: Train top talent to support Indonesia’s “Golden 2045 Vision”—100 PhDs, 1,000 master's graduates, and 10,000 technical professionals over 10 years.

Goal 3: Advance global sustainable development and empower Belt and Road countries with robust green technologies.
