Shun was entrusted with great responsibilities which were assigned by Emperor Yao and was fully occupied in carrying it out. During this time, his younger brother Xiang, ever restless and ambitious, abandoned his farming duties and turned to kiln work, However, his inexperience led to disaster—he caused a kiln to collapse, prompting the villagers to lodge a formal complaint with the local magistrate. The magistrate imposed a hefty fine, far exceeding what their family could afford, even if they sold all they owned. As a result, Xiang was imprisoned. Shun’s father sent a message to Shun to return and save his brother. When Shun returned home, he chose righteousness over familial bias. Instead of reclaiming the fine as his stepmother suggested, Shun used the family’s land deeds to secure his brother’s release. The kiln owner, who had known Shun since childhood, explained that he and the magistrate only wanted Xiang to mend his ways. They agreed to let Xiang work on their own land. Eventually, Xiang reformed and became a sturdy and honest farmer.
