What do you consider to be the most noteworthy research trends in the field of neurology currently? And how will these trends impact future medical practices?

Neurological research is advancing fast in the discovery of biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis. Alzheimer’s disease researchers were pioneers in the transition from a clinical definition of disease, based on signs and symptoms, towards a biological definition, based on biomarkers. The same trend is now being extended to other subspecialties, and I believe that research in biomarkers will substantially change neurological practice in few years. A related trend is secondary disease prevention: by use of biomarkers, soon neurologists will be able not only to diagnose a disease, but to prevent its clinical manifestations before they appear.

How do you view the research progress in neurology in Chinese medical in recent years? Which research achievements have made a deep impression on you?

China has made impressive progress in all neurological and neurosurgical specialties over the last two decades, from epilepsy to sleep research. Stroke research and traumatic brain injury research seem remarkably successful to me. In China, stroke and traumatic brAIn injury researchers have created impressive collaborative networks and infrastructure, that are allowing for impressive advances in patients’ outcomes.

With the widespread application of artificial intelligence technology in the medical field, how do you perceive its application prospects in neurology? What are the potential challenges and opportunities?

AI is already in use in neuroimaging, for neurosurgical robots, and in many devices that can track sleep, seizures, or gait disorders. I believe that China is well placed to lead many medical advances in this area. Predicting the future of this area seems risky, given how fast AI developments are taking place.

For young Chinese neurology researchers, what advice do you have to help them better publish high-quality research results in international journals?

My advice for young researchers is always to use the EQUATOR Network (https://www.equator-network.org/) when preparing a manuscript. This tool explains in detail the reporting guidelines that all major medical journals adhere to, not just The Lancet journals, but also NEJM and JAMA. When writing a manuscript for a medical journal, always check whether your paper complies with this guidelines before submitting it.

What are your expectations or suggestions for the upcoming "Showcase of Outstanding Original Clinical Research in China"?

Given the high burden of disability and mortality of stroke and other neurological diseases in China, I believe that neurological research should be high in the agenda to showcase for every season. Clinical trials in stroke, both ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke, would be my priority; however, other excellent trials and prospective studies are ongoing also in neurotrauma, dementia, and epilepsy that merit wide dissemination.
鉴于卒中和其他神经系统疾病在中国致残率和致死率居高不下，我认为，每季临床研究展播活动都应高度重视神经病学研究领域的成果展示。我优先推荐卒中（包括缺血性卒中和出血性卒中）领域的临床试验，神经创伤、痴呆和癫痫等领域也正在进行一些优秀的临床试验和前瞻性研究，这些研究成果也都值得广泛传播。
