Maren and Alaric stared at the empty space where the altar had been. The clearing was eerily quiet, the only sound the faint rustling of leaves overhead.
“Where did it go?” Alaric whispered, breaking the silence.
“I don’t know,” Maren replied, her voice trembling. She stepped forward, examining the ground where the altar had stood. In its place was a small silver key, glinting faintly in the dim light.
“What’s that?” Alaric asked, moving closer.
Maren bent down and picked up the key. It was cool to the touch, engraved with intricate patterns of spirals and stars. The whispers that had filled the forest earlier were gone, but she felt a strange pull in her chest, as if the key was calling to her.
“I think it’s the next step,” she said, holding it up.
Alaric frowned. “A step to what, exactly? We don’t even know what we’re chasing.”
Before Maren could answer, the compass, still in her other hand, began to glow again. Its needle spun wildly before settling in a new direction.
“It’s not over,” she said, determination hardening her voice.
“Of course, it’s not,” Alaric muttered. “It’s never that easy.”
The two followed the compass deeper into the forest. The path ahead was darker, the trees thicker and more gnarled. The air grew colder, and a sense of unease settled over them.
After an hour of walking, they reached a massive tree with roots twisting into the ground like claws. At the base of the tree was a keyhole, its edges glowing faintly.
Maren knelt and hesitated, the silver key in her hand. “Do you think this is what it’s for?”
“Only one way to find out,” Alaric said, though he didn’t sound thrilled about it.
Maren inserted the key into the lock. A soft click echoed through the clearing, followed by a deep rumble. The ground beneath them trembled as the tree began to shift, its roots pulling apart to reveal a hidden staircase spiraling downward.
“Great,” Alaric said. “A creepy underground staircase. Just what we needed.”
Maren swallowed her fear and stepped forward. “Let’s go.”
