On February 1st, during its winter expedition in the Bohai Sea, Sun Yat-sen University's "Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di" vessel successfully conducted ship-shore collaborative ice observation in the Bohai ice zone near Yingkou, Liaoning Province. This marks the first successful attempt at synchronized observation of sea ice using satellite remote sensing, drone flights, and research vessel operations in the northernmost extent of the sea ice zone in the Northern Hemisphere. The "Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di" vessel from Sun Yat-sen University is the first polar icebreaking research ship established by a university in China, equipped with capabilities for full-depth polar scientific exploration.

According to the research team, at 10 a.m. on February 1st, the vessel initiated drone observation operations. The drone team employed a DJI drone to conduct orthophoto mapping of the Bohai sea ice centered around the vessel, while simultaneously performing CTD observations and ice sampling on the deck. They collected physical, chemical, and ecological parameters, including seawater temperature and salinity, as well as the temperature, salinity, and thickness of the sea ice.

The expedition, which set sail from Nansha, Guangzhou on January 4th, was organized by Sun Yat-sen University and involved collaboration from 12 research institutions and universities across the country, marking the first comprehensive winter investigation of sea ice, ocean, and ecology in the Bohai Sea.
CTD observations from the ship
This coordinated sea ice observation provides high-precision and accurate validation data for analyzing sea ice conditions in the Bohai Sea, as well as for satellite remote sensing ice retrieval algorithms and product verification. It is also significant for a deeper understanding of the winter sea ice formation and decline processes, along with their impacts on the ecological characteristics and regulatory mechanisms of the Bohai Sea environment.

“中山大学极地”号首次在渤海冰区完成星-机-船协同观测
2月1日,“中山大学极地”号执行渤海冬季航次期间,在渤海冰区-辽宁营口顺利完成船-岸海冰协同观测,首次在北半球最低纬度的海冰区,成功尝试了卫星遥感-无人机航飞-科考船联动的海冰同步观测。“中山大学极地”号是我国高校首艘极地破冰科考船,具备极地全海深科考能力。
岸基无人机作业准备
据科考队介绍,2月1日上午10点,“中山大学极地”号率先开展无人机观测作业,无人机观测小组使用大疆无人机,以船舶为中心进行渤海海冰正射影像测绘,甲板上同时进行CTD观测及采冰作业,获取海水温度和盐度,海冰温度、盐度和厚度等物理、化学及生态参数。
本航次于 1月4日从广州南沙出发,由中山大学组织执行,国内12所高校科研院所共同参与的国内首次冬季渤海海冰-海洋-生态综合调查。
据介绍,此次海冰协同观测不仅能为渤海海冰冰情分析、卫星遥感海冰反演算法和产品检验等提供高精度、准确的验证数据,还对深入理解冬季渤海海冰生消过程及其对渤海生态环境特征与调控机理的认识具有重要意义。
