Night after night,Marisolwoke to thesoft glowof a lantern beneath her bedroom window. She lived by the old cemetery at the edge of town, where fog often blanketed the graves and themoonlightcast eerie shadows across the worn headstones.

One evening, curiosity finally pushed her to investigate. She wrapped herself in a coat and stepped outside into thechillof midnight air. There, standing among the graves, was afigureholding a single lantern. Its flickering flame highlighted a face half hidden by the brim of awide-brimmed hat.

Marisol approached cautiously. “Are you lost?” she asked, her voice echoing in the silence of the cemetery.

The figure turned, revealingeyes as dark as the night. “I am searching,” came the reply, soft and hollow.

Marisol glanced at the lantern. Its light wasunnaturally steady, even in the breeze. The figure gestured for her to follow, leading her between gravestones etched with dates so faded they could no longer be read.

At last, they stopped at acrumblingtomb. The lantern’s light fell upon a name barely discernible: MARISOL VALDEZ.

Herheart lurched. That was her name—but this tomb was ancient. How could it possibly bear her name?

The figure lifted the lantern, illuminating Marisol’s face. “Your path istiedto the past,” it whispered. “To break the chain, you must leave this place before dawn.”

Trembling, Marisol looked down at the tomb again.Rootshad broken through the stone, cracking it open. In the lantern’s glow, she could see a casket half-buried in the rubble. The figure’s voice echoed once more:

“Go. Now.”

Marisol didn’t argue. She turned and ran, heart pounding, not stopping until she reached her home. By the time she glanced back at the cemetery, the lantern’s glow hadvanished.

The next day, she found the tomb again—empty, nameless, just aweatheredslab of stone. No sign of her name, no evidence of the encounter. Yet she remembered it all too clearly, the chilling presence of the figure and the feeling that her fate had brushed against an ancient secret.

Though she never saw the lantern again, Marisol would sometimes wake in the night, feeling theweightof that mysterious encounter. In the shadows, she imagined a faint glow beyond her window, and the soft, hollow whisper:
“Go.”
