On March 28th, the Jade Carving Exhibition of the master Zhang Sencai opened at the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum, located in the Chen Clan Academy. The exhibition will run until June 2025.

Exhibition site

Sihui, a county-level city in Zhaoqing, is renowned as the "Hometown of Jade Crafts in China." Jade carving in Sihui dates back to the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China and boasts a history of over a century. The art form encompasses various categories, including ornaments, pendants, and decorative pieces, and covers diverse topics such as figures, landscapes, and flora and fauna.

Sihui jade carving is distinguished by its practice of adapting the artistry to the intrinsic qualities of the jade. The craftsmen ingeniously harness the stone's natural features, earning acclaim for their exquisite design and lifelike craftsmanship.

The work "Bittersweet Years"

The work "Flourishing" masterfully fuses the gentle luster of jade with natural scenery, resembling a bonsai of remarkable decorative appeal. Its withered, tree-like branches are adorned with intricately carved jade flowers and leaves in hues of pink, purple, orange, and green, while a dynamically sculpted white jade deer graces the base of the tree.

The work "Flourishing"

Inspired by the jade culture of the New Zealand Māori and early Chinese jade carving concepts, master Zhang Sencai created the work "Boundless," which presents a unique artistic form. The Māori hold jade in high esteem as an irreplaceable treasure and a symbol of prestige. Crafted from Russian nephrite, the work consists of three parts: a whale's tail, sea waves, and whirlpools, reflecting the harmonious integration of Māori and maritime cultures.
