China has taken swift and firm countermeasures following the latest U.S. tariff hike on Chinese imports, in a move to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests. The Chinese government on Wednesday announced that it would raise additional tariffs on products imported from the U.S. to 84 percent, add six U.S. firms to its unreliable entity list and place 12 U.S. entities on its export control list. All of these measures went into effect at 12:01 p.m. on Thursday.

"Against the backdrop of an increasingly complex global trade environment, especially in the face of the U.S. tariff bullying, China has quickly taken countermeasures, and in this process, it played a key role in pursuing new quality productive forces, optimizing the layout of the industrial chain, insisting on scientific and technological innovation, and promoting high-quality development," said Cai Tongjuan, Director of the Macro Research Department and Research Fellow of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies (RDCY), in a recent interview with China Youth Daily.
