A Transforming 'Beyond the Classroom' Encounter

With the development of globalization and the increasingly competitive job market, Guanghua School of Management has tailored a practical course—Career Development Practice—for the "Future Leaders" International Undergraduate Program. As the First Undergraduate English Career Development Course in Peking University, organized by the Guanghua Career Development Center, this course transcends traditional career guidance courses by placing greater emphasis on practical application.

Course-enrolling students originate from China and the subsequent countries: the United States, New Zealand, Singapore, Poland, Germany, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Japan, Georgia, Brazil, and Peru, etc.

This course provides students with an intuitive platform for career development and job search preparation. Through cooperation with top-tier enterprises, students not only gain direct access to industry insights but also improve their communication and interview skills in real work environments. In a series of activities, students have acquired invaluable intellectual wealth.

Canva- Career Planning and Self-exploration

The first event of the 2024 Career Development Practice Course took students to Canva's Beijing office, where they experienced the company's dynamic culture and learned about the evolving digital design industry. Guanghua alumna Ashley Huang, Talent Acquisition Lead for Canva in China, shared her expertise on career planning and self-exploration, guiding students in shaping their professional paths.

JD—Exploring High-tech and Internet industry: E-Commerce and AI

The second visit took students to JD’s headquarters, one of China’s largest e-commerce platforms, where they explored how the company leverages technology to drive industry growth. Students gained insights into JD's advancements in artificial intelligence and supply chain management, acquiring a comprehensive understanding of China’s rapidly evolving e-commerce and tech sectors.

World Bank-Resume Sparkling: Stand Out from International Organization Professional Candidates

In the third session, students visited the World Bank’s Beijing office, where they learned about the institution’s role in global development and its operations in China. The visit included a CV clinic, where students received expert advice on resume writing, preparing them for careers in international organizations and global finance.

Huatai Securities—A Deep Dive into the Elite Investment Banking

The fourth visit took students to Huatai Securities, one of China’s leading financial institutions. Students gained a comprehensive understanding of the financial services industry, including investment banking, derivatives, and financial research, through direct interactions with professionals from various departments at Huatai.

Deloitte—Comprehending the Consulting Industry: Decoding the Secrets of Business Case Analysis.

The final event of the Career Development Practice Course brought students to Deloitte’s Beijing office for a comprehensive introduction to the consulting industry. A key highlight was the mock case interview, where students worked on business challenges and received feedback from Deloitte consultants. This experience sharpened their analytical skills and prepared them for future consulting roles.

Going to JD was a highlight as getting to know the programs they have and how they are working in China and going to expand to other countries which was very informational and helpful for my future.

The sessions which supports job hunting, were helpful to know the difference of it between that of in my country and abroad. It focus more on skills and abilities than personality, this finding might help me to compete with others effectively in the labor market in the future.

Very insightful into the Chinese economy and working world

The course was really well structured and provided us with real life company visits which really stands out from other courses.

I was surprised at a piece of knowledge that foreign companies always give a Chinese name to reach chinese customers. Ressume and Mock interview part was impressive since I have no experience with such things. I’d like to take advantages those fascinating experience for the future.

I learned about the existence of interesting companies I didn't even know of - Huatai （Chinese Big 4 Investment Banking）and World Bank( International Organization) - and what they are doing.

Among the highlights for me were the case study we conducted at Deloitte and the insightful session at Canva on identifying our strengths.

Improved knowledge:- Learned about various industries, businesses, trends and ecosystems in China (Canva - Scale-up / Huatai - Finance / Monitor Deloitte - Consulting / World Bank - International Organization / JD - Tech/Internet Industry)

Improved skills:- Improved my self-reflection through the Big5 Test and Canva’s Approach and found new aspects that I want to improve myself in

Conclusion

The "Career Development Practice" course has a profound impact on students' career development. Through practical learning experiences, it helps students establish a clear understanding of career planning and build a network related to their future career development, laying a solid foundation for their future careers. Moreover, the course allows students to apply the knowledge they have learned in real work environments, which is extremely valuable for their professional growth and personal development.

In the future, we plan to expand our cooperation with global enterprises and industry leaders to provide students with a broader international perspective and opportunities for cross-cultural communication, ensuring the forward-looking and practical nature of the course content. We aim to better serve students' career development needs and help them achieve success in their future careers. We look forward to working together with students, teachers, industry experts, and alumni to turn this course into a dynamic and continuously improving career development platform.
