Social Security Policies

Foreigners employed within China are required by law to participate in the basic old-age insurance for employees, basic medical insurance for employees, work-related injury insurance, unemployment insurance, and maternity insurance. Eligible foreign nationals are entitled to corresponding social security benefits. For example, with regard to old-age insurance, foreign employees who have paid contributions for a total of 15 years and have reached the statutory retirement age can receive a basic pension on a monthly basis, whether they choose to retire in China or receive their pensions abroad. If they leave the country before reaching the age of pension collection, their individual social security accounts will be retained. When they return to work in China, their contribution years will be cumulatively calculated. They can also apply in writing to terminate their social security relationship and withdraw the balance in their individual social security accounts in one lump sum.

Foreign nationals who urgently need to come to China and have not had time to obtain a visa abroad can apply for a port visa to enter the country at the port visa authority with an invitation letter and other relevant proof materials; at hub air ports such as Beijing Capital International Airport, foreign nationals can enjoy the convenience of being exempt from inspection procedures for direct transit within 24 hours; foreign nationals who come to China for a short term and have a legitimate and reasonable reason to continue staying in China can apply for visa extension, renewal or replacement to the local public security bureau's entry and exit administration department near their place of stay.
