Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of victory in the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War in Moscow, Russia, on Friday, against the backdrop of a world mired in unilateral, hegemonic and coercive practices.
Eight decades ago, China and the Soviet Union stood united in the World Anti-Fascist War. The latter fought alongside the Chinese in the cities of Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing in the darkest hours of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, while China sent vital strategic supplies and primary-source intelligence to the Soviet Union in its Great Patriotic War.
Together, the two nations made enormous sacrifice and contributions to secure the victory. China's appearance at the celebrations in Russia demonstrates its respect for history and determination to defend the outcomes of the victory of World War II (WWII).
"We must uphold a correct historical perspective on WWII," Xi wrote in a signed article published in the Russian Gazette newspaper ahead of his Moscow trip, stressing that the world must draw wisdom and strength from the victory and firmly resist all forms of hegemonism and power politics.
Upholding the truth of historical memory and revisiting these moments carry special significance, especially against the headwinds of prevailing unilateral, hegemonic and coercive practices.
Xi said the most significant decision around the end of WWII was to establish the United Nations, with China and the Soviet Union among the first to sign the UN Charter. "The more turbulent and complex the international situation becomes, the more we must uphold and defend the authority of the UN," he wrote in the article.
On this, he said the two countries should safeguard the UN-centered international system, promote an equal and orderly multipolar world, and enhance coordination within multilateral platforms including the UN, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, as he and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin jointly met the press on Thursday.

China-Russia ties have forged a new model of major-country relations and provided strong momentum for global development.
During Xi's Russia trip, Beijing and Moscow signed a joint statement on further deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era and the two leaders witnessed the signing of multiple bilateral cooperation documents.
China-Russia cooperation has been growing in emerging sectors including digital economy, green energy, and e-commerce. In 2024, their bilateral trade reached $244.8 billion, solidifying China's position as Russia's largest trading partner for 15 years in a row.
Communications between Xi and Putin have provided strategic guidance for China-Russia relations to develop into a more resilient partnership. The two heads of state have met over 40 times, and this week's visit marks Xi's 11th trip to Russia since becoming Chinese president.
Against the backdrop of widening global deficits in peace, development, security, and governance, China and Russia – both influential powers in the global arena – are constructive forces for maintaining strategic stability and enhancing global governance.
As Xi said, the Beijing-Moscow relationship is neither directed against nor swayed by any third party. The two countries are ready to leverage the certainty and resilience of their partnership to jointly accelerate the shift toward a multipolar world and build a community with a shared future for mankind.
Xi's visit, the fruitful talks between the two heads of state, and China's attendance at the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War are positive signs not only for China and Russia, but also for the rest of the world that has been urging for multilateralism against unilateral headwinds.
